Okay, okay... I've been really slow in getting this online. I still have film I haven't developed yet because I haven't used up the roll. Yes, film. I got one of those waterproof disposable cameras so that I could take pics in the water but now I need somebody to invite me out to another warm beachfront so I can take more wet pictures. (Hint, hint. Anybody?) So the trip to Melbourne was fairly low-key. If you can call any trip that involves a wedding to be low key! Once the crazy festivities were done we did a family road trip out to the Yarra Valley to visit a couple of wineries. One was Domaine Chandon (of the Moet Chandon family) and the other was De Bortoli (home of the very yummy Noble One Botrytis ... read more

Its a cold christmas day, 10 days before i set off on my trip to Asia. Cold for Australian standards anyway: typically christmas would come with a barby, and a day lounging in the pool... instead i'm stuck inside with the family with the heater on full and the spa pumping!! santa has been generous this year ;) with plenty of goodies to take with me on the trip, including a lonely planet guide to Thailand... ACE! now i can start getting really excited about my trip! So it was a bit of a spontaneous decision to backpack asia about 3 months ago, so as soon as my exams finished for uni i commenced full time work doing traffic control, (or the more common, but less important sounding name.. lollie pop man!) so i spent 6 ... read more

Friday We enjoyed some toasties and coffee before heading to the Yarra Valley, a renowned wine region about an hour northeast from Melbourne. Coffee in Australia either means instant coffee or espresso-based coffee. Australians we sadly discovered, particularly after enjoying delicious coffee all around Vietnam, do not drink filtered coffee. We arrived in Healesville around noon and decided to spend the day at the Healesville Sanctuary. Healesville Sanctuary began as a place where they take care of sick and injured animals (approximately 600 per year) hoping to return them to the wild but sometimes keeping them in captivity for various reasons. We had so much fun and we were able to see kangaroos, emus, wombats, a tasmanian devil, koalas, platypuses, dingos, wallabies, kookaburras, flying foxes (also known as fruit bats) and echidnas. They have various shows ... read more

Well we didn't exactly make it along the Great Ocean Road, a rather large road-train/ truck had other plans for us! We did make it to Portland, a small town just before the GOR starts and unfortunate as we turned in to get some lunch there was the truck of doom! Fortunately no one got hurt apart from Princess (aka The Camper) Sadly she was written off as we scraped down the side of the truck. So it was a wild night spent in a hotel in a nothing town, just to get the train to Melbourne therefore missing the GOR. On arrival in Melbourne, wow what a city. Checked into the Coffee Palace backpackers in St Kilda hardly a palace, was like a big old dump very similar to a six form common room. It ... read more

One thing we learned on our trip is that Australians have a sense of humor. And John Boucher, co-owner of the Kyneton Ridge Estate Winery, in Kyneton, Victoria State was no exception. Pointing to the huge, white tent that took up a large portion of his side yard, and where his stepson was to hold his wedding reception in two days, he made a suggestion to my fiancée, Megan, and I: “You should stay a couple of more days,” John said. “And make it a double ceremony.” We passed on the quickie wedding, but allowed John to pour us a several samples of his products. For only having been making wine for five years, John, and his wife, Pauline Russell, have their skills down so much so that I only needed one sample (but tried six) ... read more
