We said goodbye to Berwick and headed for the train station where we boarded the Glasgow via Edinburgh train. The East Coast Railway service is very comfortable, clean and has a drinks & snack trolley that moves through the carriages. The trip to Edinburgh took about 45 minutes. We arrived in Edinburgh on time and headed for the National Express coach station where we deposited our suitcase in one of the storage lockers, then it was off to explore the city. Our first stop of course was the Costa coffee shop for a large, large latte before we headed down the main street, Princess Street, amongst the shops, buses and road works, they are upgrading the tram network. We followed the road towards Edinburgh Castle, which is not hard to see as it is an imposing ... read more

On Thursday 14th November, a clear cold night, we headed by taxi from our cottage to the Wolverhampton coach station where we boarded the National Express to Birmingham. After a short wait it was then on to the National Express to Edinburgh where, after 12.00hrs of travel, we arrive at 7.30am on Friday 15th November. The next leg of our journey was via the East Coast Railway service to Berwick upon Tweed. This was the first part of our journey in daylight and the scenery was spectacular especial the parts that hugged the coast line of the North sea. Berwick is just 3 miles over the border from Scotland and situated where the river Tweed enters the North Sea. Over the centuries Berwick has been the subject of many battles between Scotland ... read more

An exciting day at Tea Cosies on Tuesday 5th November, when Leslie Purchase, who is one of the organises of Tea Cosies, brought in her MBE to show us. Leslie had been nominated for her community activities which are wide and varied. Leslie headed down to London on Tuesday 29th October and attended Buckingham Palace on Wednesday 30th October where she was presented with her MBE by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. What a great honour for Leslie and because of the person she is she wanted to share the award with everyone else who is involved in what she does. The Rev Jill presented Leslie with a large bunch of flowers on behalf of the Tea Cosies who also presented her with a Congratulation Balloon and a special chocolate slice, which we all enjoyed. Our participation with St Chads & St Marys has increased during the 9 weeks we have been here and we have now been given direct access to St Chads Church. Unlike Holy Trinity where Graeme Chant issues keys and keeps a key register with St Chads they tell you where to find the key, just as well given the size of the key!!!! we can just imagine Graeme having to get this one copied and for people keeping it on there key chain. Saturday 2nd November was a damp, windy and misty morning as members of the St Chads congregation gathered to start the annual Church yard clean up. At times it was a race between those raking up the many leaves and the wind which constantly deposited more leaves from the many trees. ... read more

On Tuesday afternoon's between 2.30pm and 4.00pm St Mary's hall is taken over by the Tea Cosies which is a group of ladies, plus two or three men, numbering anywhere between 20 to 30 with ages ranging from 'do not know/did not say' to well into their 90's. The idea of Tea Cosies is very simple, drink tea from good china cups on saucers with tea made in tea pots covered in a tea cosies and eat scones and cakes and of course talk, talk talk. Evelyn and I were invited to Tea Cosies and we have now attended 3 Tuesday's. We have talked to so many interesting people who have great stories to tell of their time in Albrighton and to share their life experiences. Tea Cosies is organised by Leslie from St ... read more

Part of the annual UK Church calendar is the celebration of Harvest Festival. This occurs between the last week of September and the first week of October each year, this is the end of the harvest. Churches are decorated with all manner of local produce and thanks is given to God for what he has provided. Friday 4th October we attended the St Chad's Harvest Praise service at 6.30pm followed by a Harvest Supper in the Old School Room, The Old School Room had ceased to to be a school in 1935 and is now used as a hall for the church. The service was very special and started with the ringing of the Church bells. The bells are rung from the back of the Church and were rung by one person for 15 ... read more

We spent a day walking around the city centre in Wolverhampton reacquainting ourselves with some familiar landmarks. Wolverhampton was declared a city in the year 2000 and has a population of approx. 250,000. Cup ????? of Coffee - First stop was Costa Coffee for our morning cup however it's not possible to get a large flat white here in the UK, they only do small flat whites, strange. So we opted for a very very large latte, or was it coffee soup. Lindy Lou - The building was built in 1609 and first started life as an Inn and is the oldest shop in Wolverhampton and is also a listed building. It was used as a Bakery and in the 60's, 70's and 80's it was a used as babies & children's ... read more

Food discovered and rediscovered in the UK - Homemade hand Pork Pies, Pork Scratching’s, Chocolate Digestives, Bramley Cooking Apples, Branston Pickle, Galaxy chocolate & fresh Blackberries picked from the hedgerows along the country lanes. Friday 20th September we headed off from the manor house towards Tong a small village about a 90 a minute walk. The weather was mild and overcast but the promises of sunny spells early afternoon. The reason for going to Tong was to see St Bartholomew’s Church which is an impressive village church and is one of the top one thousand churches in the UK, it also celebrated being 600 years old in 2010. The church boasts a ‘Great Bell’, the largest bell in Shropshire and takes three people to toll it. It also has a font that ... read more

Our apologies for the time lapse between Blog updates but we have been waiting to attend services at all 3 Churches in the United Benefice of Albrighton. The Churches in the area where we are staying are grouped together as The United Benefice of Albrighton (St Mary), Boningale (St Chad) & Donington (St Cuthbert) and Jill Warren is the Vicar for the United Benefice. St Mary’s is a 12th century parish church and is the largest church building in Albrighton with a ring of eight bells and is the main Church in the Benefice, it is a 40 minute walk from our accom. St Chads dates back to the 11th century and has a shingled spire supported by a timbered belfry, a Jacobean pulpit and a beautifully kept churchyard it is a ... read more

On Sunday night, 8thSeptember, while Evelyn was cooking tea, we opened a window and the Chooks came to visit sitting on the wall outside the window. The chooks have also provided us with a couple of gifts of fresh eggs from Bob the owner of the Manor house. We have a bird feeder outside the lounge window and after placing some bread crumbs and nuts we have already been visited by a couple of regulars, Wood Pigeons, a Robin and a Blue Tit, although each morning any remaining bread has been eaten by the crows and magpies. There are also Ducks that roam around the property during the day. On Tuesday 10th September we walked from the Manor house to the RAF Museum at Cosford, a walk of approx. 10 kls return trip.
