We began the Great Ocean Road drive, the weather was miserable, cold and raining not to mention blowing a gale. But we did all the stops, the Arch the Grotto the London Bridge and of cause the 12 Apostles before landing in Apollo Bay, a really pretty spot. The next day we daytripped to Cape Otway lighthouse and the Otway Fly Tree top walk, again in the rain and wind and cold but hey who cares we are on Holidays. You only live once. ... read more

We’re Driving a Mercedes... November 6, 2008 The views from Great Ocean Road from Apollo Bay to Torquay were just as the guidebook described them…spectacular! We stopped at almost every overlook turning a two-hour drive into an all morning affair. My favorite stop was at Lorne, the surfing capital of Australia. I could live there, it’s a gorgeous town. I think Joe liked Bells Beach the best. It’s a popular surfing spot because of the way the waves break. We watched the surfers there for quite a while. Joe was wishing he had a board and wetsuit with him. There were koalas all over the place, we even had to stop to let one cross the road in front of us. They really must be one of the cutest creatures on earth. We saw more echidnas, ... read more

Now the end is nigh! This week is our last before we are back in Melbourne 2 days hence.I will try and do a final blog next week with family photos. This past week has been marked by stormy conditions.Even the past 2 days there have been gale warnings for this southern coast.we have found sheltered caravan parks along the way and have had the odd fine day.We enjoyed our 2 days at Mt Gambier and saw the blue lake which was across the road from our camp.In the summer it remarkably changes colour to a bright blue-alas we were a little early.Robe, a small seaport in SA was stormy as you will see from the photo. We have had Graham & Di visit for the weekend as we are are only 3 hours from Melbourne. It has been good ... read more

After a reviving cup of tea then did a twenty minute walk to Carriageworks an amazing building fairly recently changed into a theatre venue. Graeme told us that it was used to produce a lot of the build boards etc for the Sydney Olympics. We had a drink before it started and there was no interval. It was an 1 hour and 50 minute production of the most amazing drama in a setting that really made use of all the space. Mari got the tickets quite a while ago which were great because it sold out very quickly. The play was Black Watch by The National Theatre of Scotland. It was based on a series of interviews with soldiers who had been in Iraq but also around the time when all the Scottish regiments merged. Very ... read more

Friday morning - and an early start. Not because we were leaving early - but because I was on clothes washing chores (hope you are impressed, Sally the Snake / Monster in Law!). Although C was happy to re-wear clothes, me being me, I wasn’t - so had to get up at 7.30am to put on the washing machine. Serves me right, eh! Washing done, we headed in to Apollo Bay for breakfast at the Great Ocean Road Deli - homemade museli and toast all round! Then back to the Sandpiper Motel to jump in the car and head towards the Twelve Apostles. The Twelve Apostles lie about 90km further west on the Great Ocean Road, and are regarded as one of Australia’s most stunning natural features. Although the drive down didn’t quite live up to ... read more

An early start today - on the road at 8am to head back towards Melbourne. Overnight, we decided that we would do so by going via Ballarat - a medium sized town about 110km north west of Melbourne, and a bit out of our way - hence the early start! But first I enjoyed the journey back along the Great Ocean Road. C enjoyed the drive a lot more than the first time - as she had a little nap on the way! My driving must have been good and steady! About 90 minutes later, we stopped for breakfast in Torquay, a surfing town about half way to Ballarat. I had an amazing breakfast bruchetta while C had scrambled eggs on toast. After breakfast in the sun we headed to Ballarat. What we thought would be ... read more

G’s turn to write today - I think this was a ‘guy’ day rather than one for the girls, so have been given the writing duties! We spent a couple of hours this morning before we left Philip Island finalising our new revised itinerary after our lovely breakfast again. C went again for the poached eggs - whilst I went for the poached eggs with bacon and mushrooms (how was the toast, Homer?) After finalising our travel schedule for next week, we eventually left Phillip Island just on 12 noon and headed towards Apollo Bay and the Great Ocean Road - a drive I have been looking forward to since we booked this trip. Stage one of the journey was from Phillip Island to the small town of Sorrento. Sorrento sits at the western edge of ... read more

So I'm the worst blogger ever. I have been meaning to catch up on all these entries, and I'm just a bit lazy! Wattsy Zoe and I rented a car to go on a three day road trip covering the Great Ocean Road. We picked up our car at the rental place and were happily surprised to see we had a four-door car waiitng for us, even though we had been cheap and chosen to select the less expensive two-door rate. We set off through Geelong, and, at Torquay, the drive started to get realllly beautiful. We were staying at the YHA at Apollo Bay that night, so we decided to do pretty much the whole drive of the GOR and pass Apollo Bay to go to a Treetop Walk. Which was TERRIFYING. After all the excitement (not to mention early starts) of the past few days, I was definitely in need of somewhere to chill out for a while. So I headed back to the Great Ocean Road, to a place called Apollo Bay (Paradise by the Sea, according to the sign). It promised good walks, a sandy beach - maybe a chance to try out my new bikini? Not bloody likely! Too damn cold! The first day I was there the high was 17 degrees. I thought this was meant to be summer? Anyway, Apollo Bay was lovely - apart from the lack of beach weather, it was definitely what I was looking for. I was there for three nights, staying in the new YHA. It was beautiful....all natural wood, stone floors and floor to ceiling windows. ... read more
