27thDecember 2012. Early start today as we were keen to visit King Soloman’s Cave. We had a guided tour through the cave, which was fascinating. This cave was much smaller than Jenolin Caves, but just as good. Well worth the visit. On route to Mole Creek, we stopped at the Honey Store, where we able to taste a variety of honey. Next stop, a fudge shop. Daniel could resist the chocolate explosion fudge, while Sasha chose the cappuccino fudge and Alyssa took to the strawberry fudge. On the road again and we came across a salmon farm, 41 Degrees South. We sampled a few and couldn’t resist the hot smoke salmon. We continued on our trip south to Launceston and arrived at the gorge. The view was fantastic but the water was too cold for a ... read more

After taking our time preparing to move on we left our campsite at Dora Point and made our way back to St Helens where we rummaged through the local bookshops that had not been open yesterday. We headed west through sweeping green pastures and stopped at the Pyengana Dairy Company. The Holy Cow Cafe onsite is a gourmet food experience that rates in the top 10 in Australia. One of the employees took us through a tasting of their range of cheddars and it was easy to see why they are an award winning Dairy......superb. From the Dairy we moved on to the St Columba Falls which are about 12 kms from the township of Pyengana. The walk down to the Falls was easy enough as we passed under towering ferns and through fertile rainforest. The ... read more

It’s our last day in Tassie! Already! The first fortnight of our trip has just flown. We’ve discovered things that we want to change/add to the van, and we’ve decided that we don’t actually need everything that we’ve taken with us. Thank goodness we’re calling in at our storage facility – not just to drop things off, but because there are a number of things that I wish I HAD taken with me! We started the day with the 2km walk around the Tamar Island Wetlands Reserve. We saw native plants and a number of birds, including swans and egrets, and really enjoyed the peacefulness of the place. Afterwards, we headed into town and went to the lovely Launceston Festivale. It is held in City Park which, bizarrely, also houses an enclosure with monkeys. The Festivale ... read more

It was wonderful going to sleep to, and walking up to, the sound of the ocean. The Bay of Fires really is a gorgeous spot and, along with the Tasman Peninsula, the highlight of our Tassie trip so far. We purposely didn’t take any photos here as it would just be impossible to capture such beauty in a still shot. I’m reminded that you don’t need much at all to be content and at peace. And I’d have loved for some of our friends to be here too, to share this special place and time with us. Only having two days left in Tassie, we headed West to Launceston. First off, on our way to Cataract Gorge we couldn’t believe how steep the roads are in Launceston. San Francisco eat your heart out! The gorge has ... read more

On Sunday 15th January it was time to leave our comfortable little cabin in St Helens – it had been one of our most relaxing stays on any Big 4 park we have visited anywhere in Australia. In order to travel along a different route, we took a chance and headed for Launceston via Scottsdale. It wasn’t the most obvious route (the main road was quite direct) but we weren’t in any hurry and we didn’t want to backtrack at all. The Scottsdale route, although much longer and hillier, offered some tourist attractions including The St Columba Falls and The Holy Cow Café and Cheese Factory. It proved to be an excellent choice as the scenery was fantastic, the falls were very “full” and we enjoyed the walk through the rain forest. The main lookout had ... read more

Laaunceston is a very beautiful city, with so many beautiful old churches and so many Edwardian style buildings. The downtown is small and wonderful. The pies, which Tasmania is famous for are so delicious. Found a fantastic bakery or two or 3. No need to eat anything else, but pies and delicious desserts, which I did. Then I made a walk to the unbelievable Gorge. Beautiful building as I walked there with the Gorge almost unseen prior to arriving there. A fantastic walkway all allong the gorge. What a wonderful day.... read more
