Eva Hamburger Nielsen
I'm Eva, 23 years, living in Copenhagen, Denmark, and currently studying at the Copenhagen Hospitality College on my first school-period. But soon I'm traveling to Australia, Tasmania for 3 months, to work in the hotel industry and experience the life of Tasmanian and Australian people.
This is how it all began:
In January 2010 I decided to start at the Copenhagen Hospitality College, to study the Foundation Course - International profile, Receptionist/Front Desk Agent. The Foundation Course was 20 weeks and then I had to find an apprenticeship at a hotel. My first choice to search and my first job interview was at Hotel Wakeup Copenhagen. After an hour of conversation with the Reception Manager and his assistant, the job was mine. The journey of my new and exciting career/education had begin. I worked at Hotel Wakeup Copenhagen from the 1st of July 2010 to the 31st of July 2011, a year with wonderful colleges, talented Managers and the opportunity to develop and experience the fantastic chance to be apart of a great hotel team, a year that I will never forget. (So a big thank you to, The Director Lars Pallisgaard, Reception Manager Malene Jyrk, Booking Manager Randi Bottke, Office Manager Jytte Madsen, Booking Assistent Marie Louise Karill, Supervisor Sandra Iversen and all my colleges, Kenni, Pierre, Elisabeth, Karen, Timon, Mads, Johan, Benedicte, Kasper and also a thank you to Restaurant Manager Johnson and Housekeeping Supervisor Arzzo).
During my time as a trainee at Hotel Wakeup Copenhagen, I was offered this amazing opportunity to go to Tasmania, Hobart - to work and experience the hotel industry. Christian Beck, who is charge of the International study counselling at the Copenhagen Hospitality College, contacted me in May 2011 and told me that the school had started a new collaboration with SKÅL International Copenhagen. The members of SKÅL Copenhagen wishes to establish an exchange with their sister club in Hobart, Tasmania. And Christian thought that I was the right exchange student to choose.
After a whole lot of e-mails, meetings and conversations, it was decided that I was going to Tasmania, Hobart and that Bonnie Quarrier (the Australian exchange student) was coming to Denmark, Copenhagen.
Bonnie arrived to Copenhagen the 23rd of August and she is staying here to study at the Copenhagen Hospitality College for 3 months. I will go to Tasmania, Hobart, the 8th of October 2011 until the 6th of January 2012. During my time away I will use this travel blog, to keep all of you that are interested, informed about my big adventure, what I'm doing and experiencing.
When I come back from Australia in the beginning of January, I will then start at my second school-period at the Copenhagen Hospitality College, and then I will happily return to the Hotel Wakeup Copenhagen in March 2012.
More updates to come.
And then shortly about myself:
I was born and raised in Frederiksberg, but now living on my own in Valby. My family consists of my Mum, my Dad, my twin brother and my big brother. My Mum, Jannie, 53 years and works in a shop called Notre Dame in the city center of Copenhagen, she is a decorator and buyer for the shop. My Dad, Henrik, 54 years, he is a policeman and he is currently working in a IT department. My twin brother, Simon, 23 years and he is still living at home with my parents, he is studying to be a locksmith. My big brother, Jesper, 26 years and he is living on a little island called Bornholm, he is a soldier and has been working for the military for 6 years.
I live in a big one room apartment, 54m2, it is just 10 minutes with bike away from my parents, so I still see them a lot and I have dinner at their place at least ones a week. I used to live with my boyfriend, Kristian, but he moved to a city called Odense one year ago, to study Athletics and Health, so we see each other in the weekends, we have been together for quite some years, with on and off periods. I love my apartment, it is small, but big enough for just me. My apartment is just 5 minutes away from The Copenhagen Hospitality School, where I am currently studying my first school period at. I am going to School the next two months and then I am coming to Tasmania, Australia, which I am looking forward to, I am very excited about the exchange. Before I went to School, I worked at a modern and chic 2 star hotel, called Hotel Wakeup Copenhagen, it is placed just a few minutes away from the City Center of Copenhagen. I have been working there for one year and I am going back to the hotel after my second school period in March 2012
In most of my spare time I see my friends, boyfriend and my family. I also do fitness, to be in good shape and health. I mostly do bike fit, it is very fun, also hard, but it gives you god conditioning and a lot of energy. When I need a break from the busy daily life, then I am creative, I paint, I draw or I sew. I have only been painting the last year, so I am still not that good. But sewing and drawing is my favorite thing when I have time. I also love cooking, I am still in a learning process, but I have a passion for food. I eat everything and if there is something I haven’t tried, then I more than gladly try it. I was not raised with any animals, but I have a thing for dogs, I am allergic to cats.
If I should write a little more about myself, then I would describe myself as a very open minded, social, sweet and very carrying person. I love being around people, to help others and make everybody happy. This education as a Receptionist that I’m taking, means a lot to me, I found my way and I am studying hard to become the best. So when I was told that I was selected to go to Tasmania on exchange, and try the Australian way to work as a Receptionist and see the process of daily work systems at Hotels in Tasmania, I was filled with happiness and I was very honored and humbled.
I am looking very forward to this journey and I am looking more than forward to meet all of you that are involved in this exchange program.
Love Eva
