After our first full day in the car we were rewarded with the sight of green rolling hills and a beautiful calm bay, the surrounds of Streaky Bay Caravan Park. Joined by Mum, Dad, Tahlia's friend Cheyanne, Buzz, Julie, Emma and Abbey we were in for an adventure filled week. Matt and Buzzy were up at the crack of dawn each day, catching waves at the Island as the sun rose. They were rewarded for their early morning efforts with the Island producing clean 4ft waves for several days. Each day upon their return we either spent our afternoons motoring out in the tinnies in hunt of the elusive whiting or basking in the sun at beautiful Granites Beach. Some highlights or maybe low lights would be:
-Not catching any whiting for the first three days and having to buy some from the local store!! Along with some very tasty local oysters.
-The kids enjoying rock climbing and swimming at the Granites and the older crew enjoying exfoliating in the natural salt pools.
-The boys running out of boat fuel 2km from shore and having to employ some extreme rowing techniques.
-A much anticipated camp fire and
marshmallow night with the kids before the Bennett's farewell the next morning.
-Finally catching some whiting on day 5 thanks to Matt and Cheyanne.
-A beautiful sunny day at Granites of swimming (the girls) and spear fishing (the boys). The result-2 whiting and a monster flathead. A delicous seafood feast to round off a wonderful week.
Thanks to Mum, Dad, Cheyanne, Buzz, Julie, Emma and Abbey for joining us in the 1st leg of our trip and another adventure packed week at Streaky Bay. Looking forward to Streaky Bay 2009!
Matt's Eye View
Our first leg to Streaky Bay was familiar territory, but with full setup being a lot more work than the standard weekend in the van, I almost lost it half an hour out of Port Wakefield trying to setup an in car DVD player with more parts and wiring than the Space Shuttle. Rolling into good old Streaky Bay was great, parking the van by the beach, hearing from Buzz that the waves were pumping...this holiday stuff cranks. The West Coast lived up to its reputation delivering smoking 4ft Island for the opening surf...I could have gone home after the first 2 waves
and been happy for the next month! Boating was fun, learned that out board motors don’t work so good without fuel...good work “Captain Matt”, lucky I had the Dennis/Buzz “rowing machine” on board. Did manage to snag a few KG Whiting, very tasty and nicely complimented by a dozen Streaky Bay oysters...should have got 2 dozen! The pool at Granites is always a favourite with the grommets, with the safe clear pools and endless rocks to climb on/jump off. This time round we put the dive gear on and came across more than a few Whiting in the pool also, very hard to spear though, got a couple before Dennis speared the mother of all Flathead and that solved the looming dinner crisis.
