Monday, 5th April, We got up around 9 o’clock, I spent the morning updating the blog and then went out to the airstrip with Steve to put up a new wind sock. It all went up OK. In the afternoon we went out to the shooting range where the boys shot some skeets. (clay targets)
The evening was marred by a mini plague of insects and grasshoppers. Most uncomfortable.
Tuesday, 6th April, we got up early to prepare for the days trip, and eventually left Steve and the Family at 10-45 am for Balranald via Maude. It started raining between Balranald and Euston, quite heavy. When we reached Mildura, we topped up the Territory with LPG and then as it was another 140 kms to Renmark we decided to stay in Mildura. Just as well we did, as the sky blackened, and within half an hour we had a spectacular thunderstorm that soaked everything.
Wednesday, 7th April, Left Mildura at 9-30 am and headed off towards Renmark, on the way we were stopped at a fruit fly inspection and had to hand over all of our fruit and veggies. Even though they were purchased in Mildura. We weren’t
aware of this as we wouldn’t have bought them at all. We had lunch by the Murray at Morgan and checked out the old grain store that we camped in on our trip back in 1985. We passed many wind turbines on the hills around Hallett. The LPG in the Territory kept playing up, possibly as we had drained it down to the bottom and picked up some sludge. It eventually came good and has been since then. We stayed at the Caravan Park in Jamestown. A nice friendly little town.
Thursday, 8th April, left Jamestown at 7-45 am and went west through Gladstone to Port Pirie, then up the highway to Port Augusta. Not much to see along the way, but called in to Iron Knob an old mining town for a wee stop. At Kimba at our lunch stop, we met a couple from Sydney with two kids who are doing what we are doing, but in a shorter time. Decided to stop at Wudinna at the only Caravan Park in the area
as we wanted to check out the Gawler Ranges area. Very tired, 400 kms is a long way for us oldies.
Friday, 9th
April, went into “town” to the general store to get a waste bucket and some more hose connectors. Packed a picnic lunch and headed 49 kms west to Minnepa where we did the tourist loop of the local attractions. (all on sandy gravel roads, approx 50 kms). First was Tchurkulda Hill area where there was an original bush dunny near an old miners hut. Then on to Pildappa Rock that has features similar to Wave Rock in W A. , then back to Minippa for lunch in the park. We decided not to do the full tour of the Gawler Ranges National Park as it would have been an additional 150kms on gravel roads. Maybe another time. On the way back to Wudinna we went off the Highway to check out Lake Yanimee ( a semi salt lake ) quite impressive. We met a few travellers going both ways and picked up a few tips.
There was a young lad, Lucas, from Vienna staying at the caravan park who with his girlfriend are cycling to Perth from Sydney, we should pass them again along the Nullabor.
Saturday, 10th April, had a lazy morning then went into Wudinna and did
their Tourist loop which included Mt Wudinna, a LARGE rock, which we climbed and walked along the top to the other end. We saw some grey kangaroos hopping around the base of the rock. It took about half an hour and was quite invigorating. Back to Wudinna where we stopped for a few minutes to watch some of the locals learning dressage and
Rodeo skills at the local showgrounds. Had a relaxing afternoon and went to bed early.
Sunday, 11th April, Up early and left for Port Lincoln at 9-15 am, it was a good road all the way, all wheat country. There seemed to be more traffic than normal coming up from Port Lincoln and we discovered later that there was an air show on at Cummings that day. Checked in at the caravan park for 4 nights at approx 11-30 am, spent the afternoon putting up the annexe and settling in. Nice park, but a bit squeezy with the sites being very narrow. Lots of motorhomes, caravans, camper trailers, tents and people.
Monday, 12th April, went into town to top up with LPG and did some grocery shopping.
Didn’t do much else, just took it easy.
Met with a few more travellers who filled us in on their trips.
