Hi everyone, we haven't updated for a while so here goes. Stopped to look at Tantanoola caves on the way to Mt Gambier, they were very specy. Pulled up in Mt Gambier for a few days, lots to see here. The history of the volcanoes is quite amazing. It makes you feel quite insignificant in the big picture. The last time there was any volcanic activity was 4,600 yrs ago. Mt Gambier crater is now filled with water the most amazing blue color. We circumnavigated the crater, about 3.8 kms. Mt Gambier town has 2 large caves right in the city centre. Frem here we travelled down to the Shipwreck coast. 140 ships wrecked here within forty years. Its a haven for divers. When you see the coastline its understandable these ships never made it to ... read more

The morning came and we packed up the tent in record time and headed south towards our next goal "The Great Ocean Road". It would be far too far to drive their in one day, in fact i don't think it would actually be possible as Australia is just huge, so we scheduled in a couple of overnight stops before doing the Road. We decided to make Mt Gambier our first stop as it has a few things to do/see. However we did make the odd detour along the way to places like Robe, not much to do but the beaches and scenery were worth the stop, even if the water is freezing! The biggest draw with Mount Gambier is the blue lake. We were a bit dubious to how a blue lake could be so ... read more

Introduction The hikers are normally silent over summer as SA is way too hot to walk - so this year we headed off down South - to Tasmania. Peter decided to drive - which meant we had an opportunity to catch up with Tom and Kate in Mount Gambier and also visited their family at Beachport. If you want to read more about our Tasmania holiday then you should have a look at this web site My Tassie journey. Mt Gambier walk I got up early in the morning and walked from the Presidential Hotel towards Mount Gambier. I went past quite a few tree processing factories and through a sinkhole that had been converted into a cricket ground, before making my way up onto the ridge of the volcano. On the highest point of this ... read more

Yes, we are still in Mt Gambier and even survived a week of liver abuse when all our best mates came to visit for the June Queens birthday weekend…and stayed for a week!! Prior to that Jeff has been still loving himself sick at his work as a motorbike mechanic, we also went to the local track when they had a motorcross weekend not too long ago. Was freezing but full of mud & great stacks as you would expect. Jeff’s birthday was spent at the Mt Gambier Cup horse races, went out for dinner afterwards and dancing after that. It was only when we’d drunk Mt G dry that things started to go pear shaped…but more about that later…NOT! Believe it or not Tab has been pouring beers…and no, not down her gullet for a ... read more

Work started as usual around sunrise. It was nothing different apart from the fact that Luke appeared not to be talking to anybody. It seemed like he was in own little world. I thought it was just me and I didn’t really think anything of it. He had lent me book, which he asked me to give back at the end of the day, which I thought was a bit strange considering that I hadn’t done anything to piss him off. If he had been just another person working at the vineyard then nobody would have been bothered by his mood, but the fact that he was supposed to be our supervisor made for a really awkward and almost tense atmosphere at work. On Tuesday morning he still hadn’t come out of his pre-menstrual strop. Won ... read more

We arrived in Mount Gambier late afternoon and headed straight for the Blue Lake - an old volcanic crater. We were both immediately amazed by the brilliance of the blue. It is absolutely beautiful. No one could really explain why it's so blue, but the best explanation we got (and the best I think we're going to get for now without a lecture on Chemistry) was on the guided tour the next morning down to the crater's edge. Apparently the water in the crater, having been filtered by the unique limestone that underlies this whole area, is about as pure as water can get. And, as we all know, pure water is blue!! Hmmm. That prompted me to ask, since this provides the water for domestic use also, would the water come out of the taps ... read more

Russell - Having got over my hangover it was time to hit the road again but not without one last look at Adelaide from above. No we didn’t hire a plane we drove up to Mount Lofty. They really do like their call-a-spade-a-spade names around here. Mount Lofty stands above Adelaide and from this vantage point you can see the whole valley and right out to sea. It was great being able to see the city layout with the parkland surrounding the CBD. The only slight downer was that not only was it early morning so the temperature had barely risen above freezing - there was also a gale blowing a wind chill factor I don’t even want to think about so we moved on. Our first destination was the road along the coast to Kingston ... read more

Introduction We took a day trip to Mount Gambier on Tuesday. Mount Gambier is a major regional centre, located roughly half way between Melbourne and Adelaide. It has a population of about 25,000. The major draw card for us was that this region had active volcanos about 4-5000 years ago with major activity about 20-30,000 years before that. The result was a gently undulating country side with rich dark soil (used for growing potatoes and harvestable forest), volcanic craters, caves and sink holes. The centre piece of Mount Gambier are volcanic craters that have filled with water from the aquifer. The largest is the Blue lake, that forms the town’s water supply. In summer it appears a stunning blue colour - apparently as the semi-dissolved calcium carbonate in the lake that came from the limestone layer, ... read more

Well hello all. Just checked into an internet café for a little update. We haven’t made it to Adelaide yet. We have been seeing a lot on the way and really - we are in no hurry to get anywhere. We have entered our 3rd Ozzie province, South Australia. We have been driving down the Great Ocean Road and the drive has been amazing. There is a ton of stuff to see including a bunch of crazy rock formations called the 12 apostles. These were crazy. Various masses of rock that were once part of the land. There were nice walks along it with super sweet secluded beaches. Our stay in Melbourne went by super fast and I think we are going to stay there another few days on the way home. I’m not finished with ... read more
