This day was Joan’s birthday! We headed to Burra to celebrate and this would also be our final night in the caravan before arriving back at the Barossa to store our van.
Leaving Broken Hill feral goats were everywhere. Flocks were larger, closer to the road and showed little concern for the vehicles flying by. It is obvious the goats are more road savvy than many of the other animals that frequent the roadside as they just don’t appear as road kill. They are definitely smarter than kangaroos, which stupidly see fast moving vehicles as an invitation to race them, crossing the road before the vehicle gets there. We all know who generally wins.
As the land became drier and more desolate so the number of goats decreased. Eventually emus became more prevalent, but thankfully stayed behind the station fences. When we crossed the state border into South Australia we knew it would not be long now until our trip was done.
At Yunta we filled with fuel, surprisingly the cheapest we had bought on the trip. We also indulged in a coffee break hoping the rather scarily erratic cattle truck we
had been following would get way ahead of us. As we pulled out of the town we saw it had pulled off into a truck stop and the driver was checking on the animals. It appeared one was ‘down’ in the back. Not a good sign. Never-the-less we were glad to be ahead of this particular vehicle.
We arrived in Burra at lunchtime. Not bothering to check into the caravan park but instead pulling over where convenient, we managed to make the Burra Hotel still within the posted lunch time. We could not resist the beef schnitties. A parmi no less! Queensland and NSW don’t know what they are missing. We couldn’t get a beef schnitzel only chicken in their pubs. Zoe and Tristan lamented with us over this serious short coming.
Lunch done we checked into the caravan park before a bit of a stroll about town. This was to work off lunch so we could spoil ourselves again for dinner under the guise that it was Joan’s birthday.
La Pecora Nera or The Black Sheep is a wonderful restaurant in the heart of Burra serving wood oven pizzas and authentic Italian
food. The sort of menu listed mainly pizzas but a selection of daily pasta dishes and antipasto were also on offer. The food was stunningly simple yet full of flavour. The self-serve fridge contained beers and soft drinks but a limited selection of bulk supplied wines was also available by the glass, carafe or as bottled cleanskins. Also impressive. Generous serves saw us taking home a ‘doggy bag of ‘can’t eat another thing’ pasta, but didn’t stop Joan indulging in a one scoop serve of chocolate gelato. One scoop! That’s enormous! Thank goodness Greg had just enough room to share. A complimentary shot glass of Limoncello finished us off. All this for a very modest price. We waddled back to the caravan park where candles in a banana muffin (Thanks Zoe) served as a birthday cake. After a tuneful singing by Greg of Happy Birthday, many claps and one for luck, Joan blew out the candles but put the cake aside to eat the next day.
