Saturday 14 November continued
The parade was interesting and there were 64 floats, numerous marching bands and various other features and the final float was Santa. There were a number of old “London” buses being used as floats. As Pat said it was very nice of them to lay it on for our arrival.
We returned to the hotel about 11.30 am and they allowed us to check in and we retrieved our luggage and up to the room.
We sorted ourselves out and got cleaned up. Pat went for a swim and I caught up with some sleep. Then about 5 pm we went out for a stroll. The parade barriers and portable toilets etc. have nearly all gone and the area is a very different one from this morning.
Adelaide is cooler in temperature than we have been experiencing recently, but that is the only negative so far.
We didn't see anywhere that jumped out and said 'feed us' but there are restaurants about and to be fair it is a little early in the evening, so we decided to dine back at the hotel restaurant - Di Mare. Pat had a steak with
mushroom sauce and I had spaghetti bolognaise, followed by pecan tart. This was our second meal here and as before a very good experience.
Then back to our room.
Sunday 15 November
A good nights sleep and we eventually started to stir at 9.45 am. Pat had found the guest laundry room yesterday and headed off to catch up with some washing.
Pat returned and we left the hotel about 11 am. Our first objective was to see if the pancake place around the corner was open as we had this in mind for our breakfast.
Hooray, it was open. Pat ordered a two stack and I had a farmers breakfast (2 pancakes, 2 eggs & 2 hash browns). A cafe latte and a long black (Americano) with cold milk on the side; total bill AUS$28. With lashings of maple syrup it was a lovely start to the day and left us both with heavy lumps in the tummy.
Next stop was to locate the Hertz office where we are due to pick up our hire car tomorrow for the next leg of our journey. It was only a few streets over according to
the web instructions and we did find it straight away. Two things completed with no hassle. We will trundle the cases over tomorrow as it is so close.
We had some sundry purchases that we wanted to find if we could, so off we went shopping and wandering.
As it happened there was the Railway station just across the road and we took a look at the building and entered. This lead us to a foot crossing over the Torrens river and to the Adelaide oval, where Australia play New Zealand at cricket in a weeks time.
The bridge crossing and the oval area, with the river and fountains in the water are all really pretty. We saw a black swan and ducks all adding to the spectacle of the place.
Adelaide university buildings are all over the place, we have noticed.
We made a number of purchases in various shops and the prices are now seeming to be much better.
In amongst the shops we also eventually found the Tourist information office, it wasn't the easiest place to find, but as always very helpful people.
The map for the trip from Adelaide
to Melbourne was purchased in the Scout shop. Just across from there we had drinks and a chocolate chip muffin.
By now we were simply being tourists and took the long loop of a walk down by the riverside heading back towards the hotel and took in the scenery.
Black swans, ducks, pelicans, gannets and various other birds inhabit the river and made a very pleasant walk. We made it back to the hotel at 4.10 pm.
Adelaide is a lovely place and has been a wonderful experience for us.
