After leaving Caloundra we climbed over the great divide which was a bit windy in patches but went through green pastures and cattle country and pretty little towns on the way. By the time we arrived at our campsite at Kumbarilla which was about 5pm we had well and truly got out of the hills and across onto the more flat roads, the campsite was great well off the road and we slept like logs. Friday we went onto Moonie and stopped for a break and morning tea, after passing loads of gasfields and even oil which Santos seem to control....Moonie a quirky little place with lots of John Murray art on display, we are looking forward to seeing his gallery when we get to Lightening Ridge....from Moonie we went further on to St George, we ... read more

After rising early for one last soak in the relaxing thermal pools of Moree, we packed up and headed across the Queensland border to St George. Due to the heavy rains in the area and the land being near dead flat, we had to negotiate several flooded sections of the road. One of these was over 30 cm deep, where we just followed the faint centre line of the road. We were unable to pull over as there was water on both sides of the road most of the journey, as we were liable to get the car and caravan bogged in the mud. We went for long walks each day along the Balonne River at St George, which was in flood. On Tuesday we did a Bird Watching tour with a local Twitcher. The evening ... read more

Last blog had us in Quilpie, S.W Qld., well we are still in Qld but now heading East(ish); we keep hearing horror stories about the temps back home and are very reluctant to go too far South. Mind you the overnight temperatures here are freezing and we are very glad of the gas heater. 6 degrees inside in the morning is jolly cold. We desperately needed to do washing, not to mention all the water management (love that phrase) things so we opted for the only caravan park in town. It was a good choice as it was quite a friendly place with a Happy Hour around a hugefire pit at 4.30 – no waiting around until 5 for a drink! The owner kept the fire going with great pieces of wood and we have found ... read more

Needed to have some down time and St George provided that place of rest. The river pathway was delightful for relaxing daily walks and bike rides. This is the completion of our Central and South/West Qld loop and it has been a grounding, down to earth experience.... read more

Outback Life© Malachy Burke The first thing that hit when I arrived at Kulki was the peace and quiet. Bar the rustling of the wind through the trees the station was silent and I was now certain that I had reached the Australian Outback. Far from the rushed rat race that they call the city, I knew this was an experience that I was going to enjoy. After arriving in the small, riverside town of Bollon after eleven hours of bus travel from Brisbane I met Tamie and my work colleague Shannon, a Canadian girl who had spent the journey hiding down the back sleeping off a hangover! We started on the last leg of our journey, which was just over an hour’s drive from Bollon down an unsealed road, alive with ... read more

Well it all started on feb 6th 2011....... I had a job on a cotton farm outside of St George after only 2days of job hunting and was on the longest train journey I have suffered yet! I arrived in Moree and was met by Julieanne and her mother (who was also on the train) and we began the (what they call a short trip but is like travelling across england!) road trip towards St George. In the middle of nowhere, an oncoming car (which seems to be a rare thing out there!) started veering towards us, forcing us off the road and then stopped in the middle, full beams glaring and the guy was passed out in his yute..... I was ok until Julieanne and her mother began to get a bit worried thinking he ... read more

Hi everyone, we are off again. Having only moved house to Dorset less than 2 weeks previously, we decided we had had enough of boxes and builders (we are having the windows replaced), so, on a whim, we booked a flight to Sydney!! We left on Saturday 11th Sept and arrived in Melbourne lunch time Monday. 13th. Debbie met us at Belgrave station which was great. It is Ian’s 50th birthday on Sat so they are both very busy, so we decided to get out of their hair as soon as possible. The windscreen had to be replaced so Wed am we took Syd down to Ringwood and were on the road by 1pm. We headed for Taggerty, on Deb’s recommendation. This meant going right through the middle of the area devastated by the fires early ... read more

We went into town at Bourke in the morning to Port Bourke wharf, once so busy and important when it was a major destination for paddleboats. What we did see were Corellas - hundreds of them, flying in the air, landing in trees and logs in the river - noisy and destructive. Being native, they are protected and are in plague proportions, stripping trees of bark and leaves - it's so sad to see beautiful river red gums dying because of their destructiveness. After leaving Bourke, we drove north and over the border into Queensland and towards Cunnamulla. We counted three small rises, hardly hills, along the way, the rest of the trip was along very flat ground, with the occasional healthy flock of sheep or some cattle, a few emus or kangaroos and lots of ... read more
