After one more night in Airlie Beach after the sailing, we moved onto Townsville. We were hoping to go straight to Magnetic Island from Townsville, but we had to stay one night in Townsville as there was a Full Moon party on the Island and the hostel was fully booked. We found a fantastic hostel in Townsville to stay in for one night. It had just recently opened and was gorgeous! It had wooden floors, that were so shiney it was like you were in a museum! It had big verandas all around the upstairs with rocking chairs and wind chimes. It reminded me of an American house in the South. Townsville was a bit of a dive, but the hostel was quite far out of the town anyway. They gave us a lift to the ferry terminal the next day.
I LOVED Magnetic Island. It felt like a beach holiday. The hostel was right on the beach and the weather ws lovely. I could have stayed there for a week just relaxing and exploring the Island. We relaxed the first day, but the next day we went to a Koala Sanctuary, where we got to hold birds, lizards, a
baby croc and a koala! I really enjoyed it and it was so hands on. The talks were all really informative and they explained what they did with the money we paid. It was really cheap for what we got to do there to be honest. The rest of our time, we just spent it on the beach. We couldn't go in the water because there had been a crocodile warning from the ranger. It's not often they come to the island, but when they have been spotted, you are advised not to go in the sea. We were happy enough to stay on the beach. If I had the money and we were staying longer, I would have hired a car or a moped to explore the Island more. When me and Lynsey return to the East coast aound Christmas, New Year, we may return.
After Magnetic, we went to Mission Beach for two nights. What a mistake... I wished we had stayed at Maggie Island instead! Mission is such a dead town - there is literally NOTHING there! Just a big supermarket and a beach, but the one on Maggie was much nicer. The hostel was good,
and me and Lynsey spent the time applying for jobs at outback pubs. We applied to four jobs and heard back from two. We have accepted one which is in Western Australia. We have to fly to Perth and then take a bus for nine hours inland to get to a place called Meekatharra. All food and accommodation is included and we get between $480 to $500+ a week, depending on the hours worked. Because we are in the outback, we will have nothing to spend our money on, so we can really save. I am looking forward to the challenge and working again as I haven't had a job in a while now! Anyway, more details will come in my blog about Cairns - the last place me, Lynsey and Stephen will be together before Stephen flys home!
