1st April 2011

hi anna, i dont make a habit of contacting complete strangers but i wanted to tell you how nice it was to read that there is still 'spirit' in meeka. i lived there with my family for a few years when i was young and have nothing but fantastic memories of the place and its people. then last year in a moment of whimsy reminiscence combined with plain old curiosity my mum and i decided to take a roadtrip back there. i was so excited to be going back to meeka after so long. the excitement was shortlived. i couldnt believe my eyes. every building had caging over the windows and was surrounded by 6foot fencing and those that didnt had their windows broken. the streets and parks were empty-except of course for a few stragglers lugging half empty cartons over their shoulders (some things havent changed a bit!). even the streets which had once housed the 'well to do' types were desolate. this place that had held so many happy childhood memories now looks like something out of an apocalypse film. i still love the place. i love the colours and the rugged beauty of the land, the funny little surrounding towns and the lonely gravesites scattered around the place. but its not the same. i left the following morning feeling a little empty. i was sad that this tight knit mining town that had once been my home was now the sort of place where you felt like you were putting yourself in danger just by being there. so i was really pleased to see that your adventures there say otherwise. im glad that you and your friends have good memories of the place. thanks for reassuring me theres still life in that place afterall:) happy travels!

Looks and Sounds Amazing
Of all your blogs, I think I've enjoyed reading about this one the most. Found it facinating about the superstitions and local history of Ayres Rock and yes, good girl for not bringing any of the rock back!!!!

Glad things are working out for you at Meekatharra. You are certainly looking well. How come you look so tanned when the weather is cold? It was good to talk to you the other week. Tim sends his love. Simon in Germany at present. Tons of love. T. xx

Seasickness
Fully sympathise about the seasickness as there is no more awful feeling on earth than that. Glad you were able to snorkel but was happy you made the decison not to dive. Pity the weather wasn't too good but as you say you could always go again in the summer if near Airlie beach again.

Wow
Oh my God, you clever clogs you driving like that. I'd have been terrified, Gordon said to say Well Done too. How lucky was that that you got in just in time before 1st July and had to be driven. What an experience. Wish I could have been there to see you all putting the tents up!!!! Glad you're having lots of fun and that all is going well.

Noosa sounded lovely
Hi, just to say, Noosa sounds a really lovely place. The beach looks beautiful, and your tan looks as if it is coming along nicely! Glad the hostel was comfy and would be good if you could travel back there and get some work when needed. Wolfgang sounded a nightmare, but then he is German!!! I know not very PC of me, but what do you expect when they beat us at the footie!

Seeing the Sights
Well, you're certainly seeing the sights now. Interesting to know that Australia is much more expensive than first thought. Not too sure about the beer swigging contests!!!!! Steve Irwin Zoo sounded good, always liked his programmes on t.v. Looking forward to hearing about Noosa and seeing some pics. xx

Fantastic!
Well done Anna, what a feat climbing all those steps. See you can achieve anything now. So glad you are having so much fun and met up with nice people. I would have loved to see the kangaroos. Are you fruit picking still to earn a few $s? Weather here improving warm sunny days at present. I'm off to Nan's today, meeting the Dr tomorrow to try and get Nan admitted to hospital. Wish us luck. If not I think I will have to bring her back with me for a week or so. Mental Health Consultant thinks the dementia is quite bad and that she ought to go into a home as she can't make the right decisions or look after herself. Had a really good time in Spain and weather was good. Went in the sea but only managed a few strokes at swimming. I'm such a wooz!. Have fun, lots of love Auntie xx

Oh My God!!
Well Darling, all I can say is, glad I didn't know about the scary bits in advance (probably just as well you didn't either, or you might not have gone!) You, brave, brave girl. I'm sure I would have whimped on the mining train, and yes, you should be proud of the climb there and back at the waterfall. What a memory for you ay. Glad you got the trip now all booked and sorted, and yes, am sure you are looking forward to sunnier weather. Slap on the sun-cream though, no burns please! Looking forward to the next saga. Keep safe, love you lots, Mum xx

All Sounds Good
Sounds as if you are having a fantastic time. (you're right though, I wouldn't have liked the bird thing!) Enjoyed the photos, nearly choked when I first read about the 2 year visa! But re-read and o.k. with it now (just!) Looking forward to the next blog. Big hugs as always xx

I watched The Blind Side (the one Sandra Bullock won the oscar for), Shutter Island, Sherlock Holmes, Invictus, erm can't remember anymore! The airport was very nice, there was a spa and everything. I didn't have time to do anything as we only stopped to refuel before leaving again. I have my mobile now, so you can call. xx

Glad you Have Arrived Safely
Hello Darling, Glad you survived the long flight. Quite an experience no doubt. What films did you watch? Was Singapore as good as Gordon said it would be? Did you have time for a swim? Sorry about the rain, but am sure the sun will be out again soon. Enjoy the ensuite and t.v. whilst you can. Tons of love as always, Mum xx
