My OZ-NZ-FIJI trip

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne March 13th 2011

So the last place I headed to before flying out of Sydney was Melbourne. I was staying just out of Melbourne in a place called St Kilda. St Kilda is on the beach and the hostel I was staying in was very nice. Their kitchen was being renovated so they were putting on free dinners and breakfasts for everyone – very handy! The first day I just relaxed and went to bed early as I was very tired from the Rock Tour. The next day, I took the tram into the city centre and used their free tourist bus to look around the city. Then I headed back to St Kilda to spend the afternoon on the beach. I booked a Philip Island day tour for the next day. On this tour we went to a ... read more

This has to be one of the highlights of my trip! I booked on the Rock Tour, which was a 3 day / 2 night camping tour of Uluru (Ayers Rock), Kata Tjuta (Mount Olga) and Kings Canyon (Australia's answer to the Grand Canyon). Absolutely amazing! The group of people I was with were lovely and really made the trip. We all got on really well and our tour leader was great fun too. It was his birthday on the first day of the tour (just turning 23, would never have guessed he was so young!) so we bought him a cake at one of our stops to give to him that night. So our first day was an early start, 6am, with a long drive to Uluru (the Aboriginal name for Ayers Rock). I can't ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Perth February 28th 2011

I had only 3/4 days in Perth, but by the end I wished I had longer. I absolutely loved the place. I prefer smaller cities, so this was just right. The weather was gorgeous, and I really liked the city. I arrived at my hostel at around lunchtime. The hostel was called the Emperors Crown. It was very nice and looked as if it had just been renovated. A brilliant way to reintroduce me back into hostel life! I headed into the city for the afternoon as I knew I needed to buy quite a few things. After the loads of shopping I did, I went to the cinema as it had been so long since I had been to one. I went to see Black Swan - a very unusual film. Still not sure whether ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Meekatharra December 23rd 2010

So Carnarvon ended up being the last stop of the road trip. The other girls decided they needed a job for a bit and so found work in this town at a pub called the Gascoyne. We had found a good camp site to stay at that had a pool so I spent a lot of time there working on my tan! I tried looking for work as well but found it hard to find somewhere. It soon became clear that the other girls were wanting to stay in Carnarvon for quite a while and that wasn't what I wanted. The town was ok but I didn't really want to stay there for a long period. I eventually found work in a bar/nightclub called the Tropicana that paid well, but still wasn't that happy living in ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Monkey Mia November 18th 2010

Nanga Bay is just a resort and campsite. We were waiting for Lynsey's friend from home to join us, so this was just a place to stay before heading to Monkey Mia. Nanga Bay, as well as Monkey Mia, is in Shark Bay National Hertiage Area. Nanga was beautiful. The resort has its own pool and hot tub, which we could use for free and its own private beach. We went for a swim in the pool then headed to the beach. The water was warm and so clear! You could see all the fish swimming around and we were very lucky to see a sea turtle swim by! We met a couple of Aussie guys who were traveling around and spent the evening together around a camp fire. One guy could play the guitar and ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Kalbarri November 15th 2010

Our first stop was Kalbarri, which was about three hours north of Geraldton. It's a small town right on the beach. The beach is gorgeous and very calm. Every morning they feed the pelicans, which is quite a sight! We stayed two nights here, at a camp site directly opposite the beach. We spent one day completely on the beach and then explored the area the next day. We drove around the National Park and found some secluded spots around there. You really need a 4x4 for some of the tracks so we didn't see as much as we wanted. We went to a parrot santuary, which was nice but the flies there were too much. In your eyes, mouth, ears, everywhere! In the end, we rushed through it so we could just get out. There ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Geraldton November 13th 2010

Geraldton is a small city on the coast, although after Meeka, it felt huge! It was here that we bought our car, a Ford Falcon Fairmont. A friend, Rochelle, offered to drive me and Hazel to Geraldton as she was going to visit family. It's about a five hour drive through even smaller towns than Meeka. Lynsey had left Meeka two weeks before to go to Bali with her boyfriend and would be meeting us in Geraldton. For the first two nights, we all stayed in a beautiful cottage. It had a big kitchen, dining area and lounge, a separate sitting room, two double bedrooms with ensuites and two separate toilets. During these two days, we bought all our camping gear, including the tent. A friend from Meeka, Pedro, had recently moved to Geraldton and he ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Meekatharra November 12th 2010

I know it has been months since my last entry. I will try to get back into the routine of updating my blog! I really fell in love with Meeka during my 4.5 months there. I came across a lot of lovely people and made a lot of friends. I enjoyed my time serving behind the bar and a lot of the locals became good friends and drinking partners after work! Meeka is surrounded by mines and stations so we got a lot of miners, contractors, prospectors looking for gold and station workers passing through. I certainly heard a lot of stories from these guys! Meeka is a small town, but if you interact with the locals and make an effort to socialise, it is a fun place to stay. There are a surprising amount of ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Meekatharra July 27th 2010

Sorry it's been so long, just been busy working! So I had a great time in Cairns and actually really liked the place. It's on the coast but doesn't have a beach and unfortunately the lagoon was shut for refurbishment and only opened the day we left! Typical! We did a snorkelling trip on the Great Barrier Reef, which was amazing! You could see so much more than in Whitsundays. The colours of the reef and the fish were fantastic. I saw a turtle and we all saw a humpback whale from the boat. Also, at one of the snorkelling sights, there was a massive fish which always comes up to the boat when they get there. His name was Wally and I actually got to touch him. He was as big as a hay bale ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Magnetic Island July 6th 2010

After one more night in Airlie Beach after the sailing, we moved onto Townsville. We were hoping to go straight to Magnetic Island from Townsville, but we had to stay one night in Townsville as there was a Full Moon party on the Island and the hostel was fully booked. We found a fantastic hostel in Townsville to stay in for one night. It had just recently opened and was gorgeous! It had wooden floors, that were so shiney it was like you were in a museum! It had big verandas all around the upstairs with rocking chairs and wind chimes. It reminded me of an American house in the South. Townsville was a bit of a dive, but the hostel was quite far out of the town anyway. They gave us a lift to the ... read more
