I apologise for my lack of contact over the last week or so, but we have been sooooooooo busy! From the moment we touched down in Brisbane is has been manic, so finally in Sydney preparing to go to Asia I've managed to update it!
So here we go: Fraser Island 13th - 16th March:
We left Brisbane on a 7:00 bus, after an interesting night with sharing a dorm with 8 extremely smelly Drunk guys who came in at all hours of the morning. We were doing our Fraser Island trip from Rainbow beach which was about 4 and a half hours away from Brisbane. However due to Cyclone Hamish which had been tearing through this side of the coast, the island had been closed off so we weren't sure if we would be able to go or which day we were able to go on but due to our VERY tight schedule in Australia we had no choice but to make the trip up and risk being able to go or not!
We arrived into a very damp Rainbow Beach at mid day and after checking in and attending the briefing we found out we were on the trip
the next day; which was awesome we were now back on track! After being put into a group ours inlcuded: two israelis, 2 germans and 6 english- but it was an awesome group! We had to chose buy all our alcohol and decided who was going to drive the 4WD- em and I were too young, as were the german girls so that pretty much left two israelis and two english lads! I felt pretty safe about the israelis as they had both been in the army! We were jsut praying for good weather. Later on in the afternoon, we met the owner of the hostel who we were doing it through- his name was Luke and he was an absolute legend! He genuinely wanted us to have an awesome time and because the island had just been hit by a cyclone there was a lot of things we needed to watch out for. Like run outs, normally a foot deep because of the storm were about 5 ft and if the car drove into one on the beach at 60km it would just roll- stuff like that! Unfortunately half of the island was closed so we wouldn't get to
see the whole lot, but we didn't mind and everyone was in hugh spririts about having a quality time! Luke had some awesome sayings like- 'keep a smile on the dial'!!!
The next morning after a free breakfast we loaded up the jeeps and headed off 4 cars with 10 in each in convoy, once we'd got over onto the island on the ferry, we were on our own and after a really bumpy inland road onto the beach we were away! Everyone was heading to Lake Mackensie for the afternoon- one of the top 10 beaches in the world! we had to always keep an eye on the clock to ensure we got the right driving time for the tides otherwise we wouldn't be able to camp where we wanted. The lake was so gorgeous, the whitest sand I've ever seen and crystal waters- We took our goon and beers down to the lake and sat in the lake drinking- good times! Until the Heavens opened, but i true english style we sat it out in the lake and it was all good! At about 4 we had to leave to get to where we wanted to camp of
the beach and before we knew it we had an awesome camp all set up- steaks cooking and a nice tin cup of goon- yum! Not! (for those of you who don't know goon is the cheapest box wine you can find!) That night we had the most awesome beach party until a point! Goon does very bad things to you! I'll let brooks fill you in, lets just say I spent about 4 hours the next day in the bushes!!!
The next morning after finally stomaching a bit of breakie, we all headed to a lake called Lake Wabby which was an emerald lake; it was possibly the hardest walk of my life with a hangover- over 40 minutes of sand dunes! Not actually sure it was worth it! After going back to the camp and getting the car we head off to Lake Mackensie- we nearly didn't make it as one of the English guys- Steve was driving (they're both called Steve, but don't worry) and the becah is also used as a runway for planes- we were driving along when a plane started coming towards us- everyone was shouting- 'just stop steve, just stop', but he carried
on! Luckily the plane took off just as we came very close to it, when we thought the ordeal was over; another plane came towards us and instead of learning from the first time steve carried on until he had no choice but to swirve into the sea! MAIN ADVICE- Don't drive into the sea, OTHER ADVICE- Never stop in the sea! He did both! Slightly hairy as we were submerged in water. After another afternoon lazing in Lake Mackensie we headed back to the camp for our last night of partying. At night there were quite a lot of dingos prowling round the camp, they were harmless but not ideal when you're just having a quiet few minutes and 4 of them come up to you!
The next morning, we packed up the whole camp- the other night a really drunk guy had broken our tent by falling into it so we managed to do a bit of transferring of tent poles so we didn't have to pay then we headed off to Lake Mackensie to have breakfast and a bit of chill out time before driving back to our ferry crossing at 2:30. All was running swimmingly we
had packed up from the lake in good time, until we stopped on the beach to let one of the girls have a drive- everyone was pretty tired and not really concentrating when we realised we hadn't seen the inland road to the ferry and we had been specifically told not to drive round the island on the beach at the moment- we had also lost all the other cars! We all considered turning back, but we realised if we did that we would miss our ferry crossing, so we had to carry on. Everyone was very silent as we got to the corner of the island wondering if we would be able to get round, especially as the tide was coming in fast! But a glimpse of the ferry was all we needed, although the sand was really deep and made it very dogdy to drive in we got to the ferry just in time! Even better news was not having to pay for any loss of cutlery or anything at all! Back to the hostel for much needed showers and 3 days worth of sand in our knickers!! We were pretty shattered and after saying bye to everyone
hit the sack!
