Wow, what a few couple days. I just got back from a 3d/2n stay on Fraser Island off the coast from Hervey Bay. I arranged a trip through a hostel and got paired with 10 other backpackers from around the world. By some cruel coincidence, I was paired with 4 couples and 2 Scottish blokes. There were 2 couples from Germany, one from the States (the female was a legit circus performer, trapeze and all) and a couple from Colombia & France. One of the Scottish guys played pro soccer in Australia and the other worked in a pub in Australia. Overall a great group of people, just not the most exciting group. I won't go into much detail because we were on the go for 3 straight days. A

The package included the use of a large 4wd type vehicle. It resembled a land rover with bigger wheels. Because the entire island is made of sand, this type of vehicle is necessary to travel anywhere. I have to admit putting a large vehicle deposit in the hands of total strangers was kinda scary. Everyone took a shot a driving and there were some very close calls, but in the

end, they didn't take anything from the deposit. I drive for about 10k on the interland tracks, and after that I had enough. The interland tracks took you to all the sites, while the beach was basically like the highway.

We basically spent most of our time visiting beautiful freshwater lakes and streams. I won't go through everything we did and try to let the pictures speak for themselves. A few of the beaches were 99% silica giving it a very soft feel almost like powdered sugar. The wild dingoes of the island are very popular and luckily I was able to see a few of them running around on the beach. There was no beach swimming allowed because of sharks that hung out right off the shore. I guess large schools of tuna run through this area and bring the sharks with them. All of us avoided the water. Overall an incredible time going through rain forests, lakes, streams oceans and a few shipwrecks. I'm meeting up with the two Scottish boys up in Airlie beach where one of them lives. Next is off to the town of 1770 to catch my breath before another pre-packaged trip in the Whitsundays.
