12th to the 13th September, spent the last 2 days cleaning & washing, today we went to see the Mary Kathleen Museum & lookout. There was a lot of restored tractors & machinery. Margy cooked a baked dinner for tea, yummy. 14-9-11 we headed off to Winton & went about 90 klm’s & struck a couple that had lost a wheel off their van, all 6 studs had broken. Dennis & Warwick helped get the tyre back on by taking 3 studs off the other wheel & putting them on the broken one. They did a little damage to the van, but not too bad considering. They put the van on a RACQ tow truck back to Cloncurry to get it fixed. 3 hours later we headed off to Winton & got there late. We booked ... read more

We are finally heading west, and things are getting quite remote, and dry, and hot, and dusty…..and fantastic! This is the start of the real Aussie Outback - a great way to end the trip. Right now we have stopped for the night in a small town called Cloncurry, where we can finally connect to electricity after five nights without, and the air con went on straight away. We have just discovered that Cloncurry’s claim to fame is that it is the hottest town in Australia, having recorded the country’s highest temperature - 53.1 degrees! Fortunately, today has not been that hot. We have just spent three heavenly days in a very remote area called Lawn Hill (so remote and out of the way in fact, that at one stage we had considered not going!) After ... read more

DARWIN TO CLONCURRY Thurs 29th July, We left Darwin around 10-00am and headed for Katherine. We did some grocery shopping and checked into the Shady lane Caravan park. Very nice, lots of shade and a nice pool which we spent a couple of hours in. Still plenty of jet fighters around, this time from Tindal Air Force Base. Frid 30th July, Headed off to Mataranka for a couple of days for some more R & R. The Homestead Caravan Park was nearly full. Old, but nice, and a bit dusty. The thermal pool was great, we spent a couple of hours there, chatting with people. Sat 31st July, We had a swim in the morning then went for a drive up to Bitter Springs to check it out. The thermal pool is not as people friendly ... read more

Tuesday 20th April Before saying goodbye to Charters Towers called into the info centre and chatted to Steve Caught, a friend of Lyle’s from Kuranda. There were a couple of activities on in or near the town. One was viewing distance education in action the other was just out of town looking through one of the old gold mining operations. We decided not to go and headed west. At Homestead there was no diesel so continued west. Tried to find the entrance to White Mountain National Park, went a few km too far so stopped and asked at the Torrens Creek Post Office. The lady in the tiny Post Office gave us directions so we headed back only to find that no unauthorized vehicles were allowed to enter. We had asked about it earlier but no-one ... read more

A new chapter is about to begin... We have landed two jobs. The first one is near Darwin. More specifically, a town called Batchelor, which is the gateway to Litchfield National Park. It is working at a resort and butterfly farm. We will be doing reception, reservations, kitchen and bar work. All food and accommodations is provided. And best of all, it counts as regional work towards my second year visa! :) Here are some links to check out the resort and the park: http://www.butterflyfarm.net/ http://www.nt.gov.au/nreta/parks/find/litchfield.html The second job, is working at a secluded resort on a small island in Malaysia. Yes, for real. Mainly doing barwork. Again, food and accommodations is included, but the pay is very minimal. It appears to be a great and unique experience, but the downside is that it would use ... read more

So...finally, an update for you guys. A lot has happened over the course of the last week. I have taken a job at a hotel in the outback. It is called The Leichhardt Hotel in Conclurry. The nearest major center to here is Mt. Isa, which is a good hour or more away. Really, that "major" center is only a city of 23,000 people. Haha! Oh, and you should also note that I am in one of the hottest places in Australia. It gets into the 40 degree mark here on a regular basis. YUCK!!! I came here with my English friend Rachael. It will be a very, very different experience than any of the others I have had thus far, and a major shock to the system after spending so much time in a big ... read more

We finally left on Tuesday 12 May. We’ve been driving for six days now and are really into holiday mode. We headed west along the Warrego Highway then turned north on to the Landsborough Highway at Morven. The roads are narrow and very bumpy but improved on the second day after heading north. It’s fairly green open countryside with attractive towns. - Tambo, Blackall and Barcaldine, where we stopped for the second night. 90% of the traffic is roadtrains and caravans and the other 10% is white 4x4 utes - so we feel right at home in our white 4x4 ute towing a caravan. Barcaldine to Cloncurry had long stretches between towns, little traffic and lots of bumps. The scenery was lovely with rolling grassy plains still tinged with green and colourful hills in the distance. ... read more

Wondered where we were? A bit of a gap caused by poor Telstra coverage and lethargy! Back on deck now though and happy to report we have reached the Gulf. We drove here from Cloncurry yesterday and are in Karumba. We have done over 4000 km now with fuel consumption running at 14.3 litres per 100 km. Anyhow back to the last report. Charleville The visit to the Outback Night Sky Cosmos Observatory was really good. They had three large telescopes and focused on various stars, clusters and groups for us to see. We even saw Pluto and with its two rings it looked like a cricket ball with its stitching. The Camp Oven Dinner with a Bush Poet and 'Stainless' Steel a local cop talking about safe driving in the bush was also good. Excellent ... read more

June 22, Monday Drove from Lawn Hill to Cloncurry with no dramas. The scenery ranged from grass plains to light scrub. On arrival at Cloncurry I went to the Lands Office to enquire about property at Burke and Gregory. For just $5000 you can buy a block in town. A building of some kind has to erected on the property within a year was the only condition. Further investigation, shire rates seem very high so I didn’t buy anything (haven’t got the money anyway). At the Post Office I sent off another 3-hour video and phoned mum, dad and the children. Pitched the tent at the caravan park. Had something to eat, then went to the pub for some liquid refreshments. It was a quite pub and I sat alone in the middle of the bar. ... read more
