19-9-11 lazy day today, we are both stiff & sore, so decided to go to the Rock Pool & have a swim & picnic lunch. It was nice & relaxing, but the pool was cold. 20-9-11 Back on the road again, went through Injune, Roma & landed at Chinchilla about 4pm & set up. It was good to see everyone again. We left on the 20-7-11 & travelled for 9 weeks. We travelled 9275 km & had a great time. Our holiday is over & we will go to Goondiwindi next & then back to Wollongong as my Dad & Ivy are not too well. ... read more

17-9-11 Got to Takarakka Bush Resort early & set up ($41 a night for 3 nights), then took off to Carnarvon Gorge Visitors Centre, to get our maps for our walks. We decided to do the shorter walks today, so we went to Mickey Creek Gorge, Warrumbah Creek Gorge (3 km return) & Baloon Cave (1 km return), where we saw Aboriginal paintings. We then headed back to camp where we had a walk & saw an Echidna & visited the Platypus Pool with no luck seeing one. It is a great park with a beaut camp kitchen & fire pit. Tomorrow we are doing the big walk (I hope I make it, I will have a go).... read more

Early morning, we began preparations for our hike into the Gorge proper. Backpacks are filled with sandwiches, rain jackets, cameras, snacks and water. We seem to be the last car out of the caravan park, as all the grey nomads have headed to the trails early. We drive 4kms to the Information Centre and approach the Gorge. The excitement is brewing in the car as the boys look forward to a day’s walking. Sure we’ll be walking for 4 hours – no problem. The main track of Carnarvon Gorge is well worn, and well signposted. Some 40,000 visitors a year make the same trek that criss-crosses the Carnarvon Creek. Who’d have thought that such a small body of water wore away these cliffs over time? (Of course in flood times, this small creek becomes a raging ... read more

Roma is an interesting place. You always hear that there’s a two speed economy with the Mining sector, and associated towns growing at a faster rate than the rest of the economy, but today I saw some of what that meant. Roma Airport was filled with white utes with red flags on them – probably 200 or so – all ready to collect miners from the airport, and drive directly to the surrounding coal mines. Every Motel in town was fully booked, as were all the cabins in the caravan parks. Most of these motels and cabins were accompanied by white utes with red flags or white 4wds. Locals told us that they were busiest from Monday to Thursday when the majority of the shift workers flew or drove in. Many miners, and tourists are being ... read more

After leaving Cania Gorge we headed on our way to see Carnarvon Gorge stopping for a couple of nights at a "free camp" on the Dawson river at Moura. This was our first experience camping in a free area so we were a bit dubious about what it would be like. It was great! So hopefully there will be more to come. Once again this is usually a good fishing spot but since the floods nothing has been caught. Lucky I bought enough meat for every night! Peter is having a great time playing camp-fire bushman. He is starting to look like some kind of wild bushman too! While Max got babysat at a caravan park at Rolleston Peter and I went hiking some of the tracks at Carnarvon Gorge. It is absolutley beautiful! We looked ... read more

On Tuesday the 17th of May we arrived in Carnarvon Gorge National park. We stayed just outside the park at a caravan park called Takarakka . We did a walk the next day half the way down the gorge. There was a river going down the gorge and the track crossed over the river again and again and again. There were little side walks along the way, for example ‘the moss gardens’ which was a little waterfall with lots of moss growing around it. ‘The ampitheatre’ was a big cave. ‘The art gallery’ was an ancient aboriginal art site and ‘Wards canyon’ was a waterfall that you could walk around. In the end we walked 15km. On Thursday we did another walk to Biloola bluff which goes up onto the 200m cliff tops. There were two ... read more
