Lion dance - Tết 2014
Vietnamese boys performed lion dance on the first day of the Lunar New Year 2014 which is the Year of the Horse (31 Jan 2014).- Two weeks had passed since I arrived in Australia. I had not met any Vietnamese during that time, so I was happy to go to Inala market in Brisbane at the weekend. The market is over one hour drive from the town where I stay. Most of the shops at Inala market are owned by the Vietnamese. You also can find an India watch shop, a Japanese sushi stall, or a Korean hairdressers at Inala shopping center. Many Vietnamese shops and restaurants are located inside and outside Inala shopping center. I prefer the outdoor area. There are various Vietnamese shops selling vegetables, foods, jewelery, fishes, medicine etc. Lots of the foods and products were imported from Vietnam. I bought Vietnamese coffee, foods and other necessary things at some shops.
It was so great to hear my Vietnamese mother language on the foreign land and I could talk to a few people, but mainly asking for price. Unfortunately, I couldn’t make friends with them or ask more about their lives as they were busy selling things. Vietnamese men were playing chess at Inala market on Saturday morning. hard in the country at that time. The Vietnamese in this area speak Vietnamese with southern accent. Some groups of Vietnamese men gathered to play chess. When I was walking by the shops with Vietnamese names, I felt the exciting atmosphere same like at home. There was a song of a Vietnamese singer somewhere at the market. All of them made me feel so close to my homeland which is 10 hour flight away.
I went to a Vietnamese restaurant which has photos of various Vietnamese foods outside. AUD 8.5 for a bowl of Pho noodle soup, while in Vietnam it only costs AUD 1.5. To get 4 spring rolls, you will have to pay AUD 5. I know I have to forget comparison of prices between here and Vietnam, but foods are expensive in Australia (especially at the restaurants) and many local people agreed with me on this. I have also found some materials at a local supermarket and made spring rolls at home using Vietnamese rice papers and sauce, as well as Australian materials.

There are many shops inside the center which are owned by the Asians such as the Vietnamese, Korean, Indian and Chinese. However, Vietnamese shops are majority. places in Brisbane. I only went to Mt Coot-tha for the city view and IKEA store. I will go back to this city on another occasion.
Friday, 12 July 2013 - I was back to Inala market on the second visit as I was traveling on my way to Sydney. Most of the shops were closed in the evening. I went to a shop and bought some Vietnamese foods. It was sale off time so the foods were cheaper. It was interesting to see how different the market was during the day and in the evening.
Friday, 31 January 2014 - I returned to Inala market to see how the Vietnamese celebrated Tết (Vietnamese Lunar New Year). This was my second trip to Australia. 31 January 2014 was the first day of the Lunar New Year (the Year of the Horse). Most of the shops were closed, however some shops and restaurants were still opened. There was lion dance and fire-crackers were set off in front of a vegetable shop. The smell of fire-crackers reminded me of my childhood as we used to celebrate New Years with it. I was surprised to see an Australian boy in the

Foods, vegetables and various things are sold at the Vietnamese market in Brisbane. lion dance group. He was the only westerner among Vietnamese boys and girls who were performing lion dance and beating drums. After the fireworks finished, some boys cleaned up the area quickly and the place was quiet again. I enjoyed a bowl of noodle soup and that was the only Vietnamese food I ate on the first day of the New Year. It was really interesting to see lion dance and fire-crackers by chance at the market.

Lion dance and fire-crackers on the first day of the Lunar New Year (31 January 2014) which is the Year of the Horse. Á khác, như cửa hàng đồng hồ của người Ấn Độ, quầy hàng bán sushi Nhật Bản, hay hiệu làm tóc của người Hàn Quốc. Có rất nhiều các cửa hàng và quán ăn của người Việt nằm ở bên trong và cả ở phía bên ngoài trung tâm thương mại Inala. Tôi thích khu vực bên ngoài trời hơn. Ở đây có những cửa hàng bán rau, đồ ăn, đồ trang sức, chợ cá, hiệu thuốc v.v. Phần lớn các loại thực phẩm và đồ dùng được nhập từ Việt Nam. Tôi mua cà phê Trung Nguyên, một số món ăn yêu thích và các vật dụng cần thiết tại các cửa hàng ở đây.
Tôi cảm thấy rất vui khi được nghe tiếng mẹ đẻ Việt Nam thân thương ở một đất nước xa xôi và có thể nói tiếng Việt với một số người, chủ yếu là hỏi giá tiền. Tất cả những điều này làm cho tôi cảm thấy thật gần với quê hương, mặc dù Việt Nam cách nước Úc 10 giờ bay.
Tôi đi ngang qua một nhà hàng của người Việt ở khu chợ. Bên ngoài nhà hàng có dán nhiều ảnh các món ăn của Việt Nam. Giá tiền là 8,5 đô la Úc (tương đương 170.000 đồng) cho một tô Phở, trong khi ở Việt Nam thì chỉ có giá 30.000 đồng. Một đĩa 4 chiếc nem rán có giá 5 đô la Úc (tức là 100.000 đồng). Tôi biết là mình cần phải quên đi việc so sánh giá cả giữa hai nước, nhưng đồ ăn ở Úc khá

AUD 8 for this bowl - it was so big and had sweet taste (southern Vietnam's style) đắt, nhất là đi ăn ở nhà hàng. Nhiều người Úc cũng đồng ý với ý kiến này. Tôi đã tìm được một số vật liệu làm món nem rán tại nhà. Trong siêu thị của người Úc có bán bánh đa nem và nước sốt chấm chả giò nhập từ Việt Nam. Ở đây không có bán su hào. Tôi cũng có thể dùng một số nguyên liệu khác của nước Úc để làm món nem rán và các bạn người phương Tây cũng rất thích món ăn truyền thống này của người Việt.
Thời tiết cuối tuần không tốt. Trời mưa và lạnh, nên tôi không thể đến thăm nhiều nơi ở Brisbane. Tôi chỉ có thể lên đỉnh núi Coot-tha để nhìn toàn cảnh Brisbane và sau đó thì đi thăm cửa hàng của IKEA (công ty nổi tiếng của Thụy Điển chuyên về đồ gia dụng). Tôi hy vọng sẽ quay trở lại thành phố này trong một dịp khác.
Thứ sáu, ngày 12/7/2013 - Tôi quay trở lại chợ Inala trên đường đi Sydney. Đây là lần thứ hai tôi đến thăm khu chợ này. Hầu hết các cửa hàng đều đóng cửa

Most of the people at Inala market are Asians. vào buổi tối. Tôi đến một cửa hàng và mua một vài món ăn của Việt Nam. Lúc này, chủ cửa hàng bán hạ giá, nên đồ ăn khá rẻ. Thật thú vị khi nhìn thấy sự khác biệt của khu chợ này vào ban ngày và buổi tối.
Thứ sáu, ngày 31/1/2014 - Hôm nay là ngày đầu năm mới Tết âm lịch và tôi quay trở lại khu chợ Inala để xem người Việt ở đây đón năm mới như thế nào. Đây cũng là chuyến đi lần thứ 2 của tôi đến nước Úc. Hầu hết các cửa hàng và quán ăn đều đóng cửa, tuy nhiên vẫn có một số cửa hàng và nhà hàng mở cửa phục vụ khách. Trên khoảng sân phía trước một cửa hàng bán rau quả có biểu diễn múa sư tử và đốt pháo. Mùi thuốc pháo gợi cho tôi nhớ đến tuổi thơ khi ở Việt Nam còn được phép đốt pháo vào dịp Tết. Tôi ngạc nhiên khi thấy có một cậu thanh niên người Úc tham gia biểu diễn múa sư tử. Cậu là người phương Tây duy nhất trong số các bạn trẻ người Việt

I was back to this market on the second visit on evening 12 July 2013. It was very different with my first visit as most shops were closed. bao gồm cả nam và nữ tham gia múa sư tử hoặc đánh trống. Khi việc đốt pháo kết thúc, mấy cậu thanh niên nhanh chóng quét dọn đám xác pháo và khu vực này lại trở nên yên tĩnh. Tôi gọi một tô bún riêu và đây là món ăn Việt Nam duy nhất của tôi vào ngày đầu năm mới. Việc tình cờ được xem biểu diễn múa sư tử và đốt pháo ở chợ Inala quả thực là một trải nghiệm rất thú vị.
