The turnoff for Kakadu National Park is at Pine Creek, and we had to decide whether to head into Kakadu or trek north to Darwin. We decided to head north into Darwin, as we were catching up there with friends that we had met in Queensland last year, and I was keen to get a new set of tyres fitted on the caravan before we move on too far. Pine Creek was founded when workers digging holes for the Overland Telegraph Line discovered gold, triggering another Australian gold rush. There have been a number of gold and iron ore mines operating in Pine Creek, with an open cut gold mine only closing in 1995 after having extracted 21,700 kg of gold over a ten year period. We started the morning by heading back to Nourlangie Rock for the third time this trip, but this time getting there early in the morning with one goal: Black Wallaroo. I had found out that the best way to see these, was to make sure you are the first person down the path in the morning and apparently they are generally easy enough to see if you are the first person down the track. That’s what I had heard anyway. I walked down the path slowly, looking carefully at the base of the escarpment and in rocky areas because Black Wallaroos are actually a generally nocturnal species, coming down to the base of the escarpment to feed before sheltering in caves or under ledges during the day, but I knew people do see them here. Joined the mob in Galloping Jacks for breakfast...our first formal one of the trip (we have been sticking to an apple and juice.)Not sure if we are water nymphs or water rats but it was back to the 'cruise' again this morning. This time in the impressive Nitmiluk National Park and Katherine Gorge.Katherine is the fourth largest town in the Northern Territory and is often referred to as the "cross roads of the north" and it is a short 29 kms from the gorge. The Katherine Region has an area the equivalent of Victoria and welcomes some 300000 tourist a year.This group of tourists's first stop was to the Nitmiluk Visitor Centre and this is one with a view. ... read more

Moved on from Kakadu to Pine Creek a small town that once again as built on the back of the gold rush.There are still mines being mined here for both gold and ore.There is an open air museum showcasing some of the early machinery used for mining in the area well worth a visit. also a railway museum housing a Steam loco built in 1877 in Manchester and shipped over here to work in Perth and several other locations ,it was not decommissioned until 1945.As usual with these small towns the re a few heritage buildings to have a look at.Interesting the lady who served us in the local shop and also caravan park booking is 3rd generation Chinese Australian, her father owns half the town and a local mine.This area is suppose to be a ... read more
