Yellow River
Hope this is as stunning as it looked in real life Well we believe we did find the real Kakadu today! It was pretty amazing!
The day started well. The caravan park had en suites so it's great to have a proper bathroom to yourself! Only trouble is the locals thought they should share! Yeah went in for a shower only to find a great stack of ants having a meal of dragonfly! They weren't happy to see me either!! Then a tiny gecho flew out of my bathroom bag! I could smell listerine on his breath too!
Next stop the Bowali visitors centre 5 mins from Jabiru. Got all the info on what to do and to be fair it seems most of Kakadu sights happen on this side of the triangle not the north side. Yay!
Next was Nourlangie which was a lookout and billabong. This is 'stone country' and it's easy to see why. It was a beautiful rock climb to the top. This area has definitely been part of the ocean or a river many eons ago. The rocks are full of river pebbles and there's many rock pools (sans water) brilliant to see. Gorgeous place! I was a bit spooky going down, took a
Yellow River
Thats a real croc and we just meandered past! longer way to avoid jumping over a crevice. It looked like a massive gap but Rob said it was barely 60 cm!
After we got down we took the walk to a billabong. We swore we saw a croc wallowing out in the middle! Could have been a log not sure!
Next stop the rock paintings. Fabulous walk through some beautiful rock walk ways and caves. Super well worth the effort! Paintings are 1000's of years old and the terrain is stunning. Photos taken but you know the old story they probably won't do it justice ... But we tried.
Travelling further west we found Cooinda, a resort that services the Yellow River. Its a very nice place so we've decided to stay over here tonight. If you come to Kakadu, we'd recommend you come here and make this your base.
We booked a tour on the Yellow river. This was absolutely amazing! Its a very slow flat boat and we had an aboriginal guide who knew heaps! This trip was an absolute highlight and if you ever get a chance please do! Ours left at 4:30 so it was just starting to cool down a
wee bit and we got to see the sunset as well. Saw many crocs just popping up to watch us slip on by! Birds galore and ,magnificent flowers. My words or photos wont give you the best picture of this place, you really do need to see it. It's very obvious why its World heritage listed. It was incredibly beautiful, breath taking! Wish I could remember all the names of the birds as our guide could. The 2 hour trip went way too quickly. it was superb for the bird life, the trees and grasses, the crocs and the knowledge of the guides. Peaceful and splendid! One of the best touristy type things we've done that's for sure!
Back in the Bago we had some dinner and settled in. Not sure what tomorrow will bring, we will probably head to Litchfield National Park. We went years ago and its also a spectacular place.
Stay warm!
