Welcome to the Royal Darwin Show 2009!
Friday July 24 was a holiday here in Darwin. It’s called Show Day. What’s the significance of the holiday? Not completely sure actually. All I know is that they have an exhibition/fair down at the show grounds (much like the Fred’s Pass Show) and lots of people go to it. Lol So of course, Hillary and I had to partake in the festivities.

We decided to go on Friday morning, and take advantage of the day off work. It really was like a big fair! The first section was mostly exhibitions for different organizations. There were the armed forces of Australia, St Johns Ambulance, and some car stuff to name a few. Then there was a farmer’s display and competition. Here was tons of animals (like chickens, ducks and rabbits) for visitors to look at. It was a little sad seeing them all in cages though. Hillary assured me that if she had a rabbit it would get plenty of space to hop around and be happy. Lol Then in the centre of the grounds was some show jumping. Very cool. It looks like a riding school was doing some demonstrations. Unfortunately this was also the time Hillary received an

unwanted gift from above. Yes, some bird droppings had hit her on the forehead, right above the eye. They say it’s supposedly good luck, but quite frankly I can’t see the reasoning behind that. Haha

One of Hillary’s favourite events was the racing pigs! There was this small little track where four little pigs would quickly run around for first place. Each section of the crowd was assigned a pig to cheer for, and of course they all had great names. The first heat was named after pork products (like bacon and sausage), and the second heat was named after Simpsons characters (like Homer and Lisa). I can’t remember who won off the top of my head, but if I’m able to upload the video, you should be able to see for yourself! As for the finale, they even had some diving pigs! When you think about it, it does sound a bit cruel but it didn’t seem forced, and the pigs appeared to enjoy their quick dip in the water. lol

Next we checked out the vendors, who had plenty of little cool things to buy. I, as always, was very tempted to buy some posters, but

seriously, talk about one of the most impractical things to buy when traveling long term. Lol We also saw the infamous Show Bags. Everyone who had been to the Darwin Show mentioned these bags, so we had to check it out. They’re basically themed loot bags, except bigger and with more products (like toys and clothing). For example, you can get Dora themed bags, Finding Nemo themed bags, sour candy themed bags or chocolate themed bags! There were so many to choose from it was crazy. To complete the experience, I picked up a candy bag and Hillary a chocolate bag. We wanted to get a Show Bag, but it didn’t make sense to get anything with stuff that’d just fill up our backpack, food themes seemed to be the way to go.

Unfortunately, Hillary had been called into work while we were at the Show. She might have turned down the shift but since Friday was a holiday, it meant her pay was double the usual hourly rate. Tough to turn down. Luckily we had pretty much seen everything there was to see that morning, so it wasn’t like we were missing anything,

The next week would

be an interesting one at work. John had taken a week’s holiday, which meant I would be running the show back at the university (for the custodians that is). Some days the work load is manageable with just one person, but most days there’s furniture to be moved, which needs two guys. It was going to be a pretty busy week, so we got another temp worker in, named Frederico. He was an Italian backpacker traveling in a camper van with his girlfriend from Japan. He hadn’t been as lucky as I had been with finding work, so he was averaging 2-3 days a week (typically at different places). It really made me thankful for my work at the university. Anyways, the week went by without any major hiccups. People contacted Facilities with a job. The job gets routed to the appropriate people. I then schedule the custodial jobs into appropriate time slots throughout the week, based on when we’d be available to complete the work. And then each day we do what needs to be done. Simple enough. It was nice to be in charge of my own work for a bit, but in the end it was even

nicer to have John back the next week.

Hillary and I feel like the NT police could benefit from a uniform change. They always just seem to look like park rangers.
