On Wednesday, 24th, we anchored in Darwin Harbour, at the Waterfront Wharf. We were able to disembark the ship and walked along the walkway , past Stokes warf to the lovely Waterfront precinct and up into the city. Fletcher wanted to find a bank to get some cash, so we wandered along the Mall and eventually found the ANZ bank. It was already warm with a hotter day to follow. We found a taxi which took us to the Aviation Museum near Darwin Airport. We had missed this last time we were here in 2020.
The main attraction here is the B-52 bomber which takes up the whole of the enormous hangar. It looks like the mother hen with all the other planes nestled under its wings. I Ihad not realised how big it is.
There were other more modern planes here as well, such as a Mirage jet, a F-18 Hornet and a F-111. There was also a couple of short films to watch, one about the Ross brothers first crossing from the UK to Australia, as well as one detailing the bombing of Darwin during WW2. As both our fathers had been in Darwin during that time
it was an interesting insight into those events. We happily spent a couple of hours there.
We took a taxi back to the Waterfront and chose the Oyster Bar for lunch. Here we shared a seafood platter and some coconut prawns. Very delicious. After a glass or two of wine we returned to the ship in time for the evening quiz which we won, yet again. We are now a team of six. Janine met a couple, Helen and Rob, with whom they had teamed on a previous cruise and as they had missed the first of the progressive trivia they have now joined us. Rob is blind but has a great knowledge of trivia questions as they have been on over a 100 cruises!! That night we went to the Dragon Lady Asian restaurant, which was OK bu not really up to expectations.
The next two days were sea days as we proceeded through the Torres Strait and round Cape York. There were some grey skies but it was still warm, though too windy to go out on deck. We fell back into a pattern of quizzes, lunch in the Waterfront ( the menu did not change the
whole cruise) another quiz and the all important progressive trivia which we most want to win. We went back to the Dragon Lady and this time the food was inedible. We ordered the calamari. When it came it was brown and rubbery and after one bite I could not eat any more. We complained to the waitress who offered to replace it with a Thai Green chicken curry. When this came it was even worse. It looked like slop with huge chunks of chicken and when we rejected this as well she tried to tell us it was Modern Australian Asian food. I have been to many Asian restaurants and have never seen anything like it. The people at a nearby table also agreed with us. Thank goodness we were not paying extra for it. What a disappointment!!
On the second night of the sea days the choir of passengers put on a performance in the atrium. As Chris was in the choir we went to watch. They were great!
We are now looking forward to stopping in Port Douglas where I have booked a river cruise which goes along the river looking for crocodiles on the Lady
Douglas.
