It was 5am when we had to get up for the flight the Ayers Rock, not a time anybody can say they enjoy being up at! The lack of sleep was clearly getting to Sophie as 5 minutes after we took off from Cairns airport she looked down and asked Mum whether the land we were over was still in Australia, bless her. When we arrived at Ayers Rock airport 3 hours later the first thing everybody noticed was the smell! Stepping off the plane was a huge shock as the air smells so different to anywhere we’ve ever been before, it was weird! After a drive to check out our resort, we went straight to look around the Olga Mountains for a while. They were pretty good, but nobody could really be bothered with ... read more

We want to start by saying....please excuse our spelling errors as we are experiencing technical difficulties where we are and as such we are posting these blogs whether they are grammatically correct or not. We have lost four attempts this week at posting this blog and can't be bothered doing it again..... That said, sit tight and we will fill you in on our latest news. We left Coober Pedy on Sunday at approx 9.30am and the scenery was of miles of mounds of rubble showing where prospectors had tried to find their fortunes, although we are not quite sure how many actually succeeded. Then we came across a burnt out bus on the highway, which was quite a thrill as the scenery had not changed for quite some time. Whether that was from an upset ... read more

Well here we are at Ayers Rock and there has been a distinct change in the weather and our outlook. Before we get onto Uluru we'll fill you in on Coober Pedy. Last time we left off things weren't looking real flash. The caravan park was a bit dumpy and the weather was average. So average in fact that Coober Pedy averages two days rainfall in July, two of the days we were there. However we're happy to say that the rain stopped on the second morning which allowed us to get out and about. And we must say the town was much better the second time. We started the day off by visiting some underground places which were absolutely amazing. The highlight was Faye's underground house which was 'built' by a 29 yo woman in ... read more

It was nice not to have to pack up the camper this morning but we did have an early start to watch the sunrise at Ularu. We had decided to do the Valley of the Winds walk at the Olgas so we packed our picnic lunch and water bottles and set off. The walk was pretty steep at times but the scenery was worth it, we finished our 8km trek in about 2.5 hours and we all pretty pleased with ourselves. After a rest and a walk around the shops we (Rhonda & Lisa) decided that we were going out for tea and booked in to the Arnguli Grill, at the Desert Gardens Hotel - and appart from the fire alarm going off it was a lovely night. We are packing up tomorrow to head to ... read more

We woke to light showers and got packed up and on the road early. After a stop at Eridunda (more mice!) we joined the convoy of cars/4wds with caravans/trailers all heading to Ularu. It rained most of the way out and we were getting disappointed that we wouldn't see the famous sunset today. The Ayres Rock Camp Ground is packed and the only places left for us are the unpowered sites out in the "Paddock". Its a bit noisy but hopefully the generators will be turned off soon and everyone will head to bed. We took a drive out to Ularu after we got set up and were all blown away - it is much bigger than we expected and after a walk around the base David and Colin are rethinking climbing the rock tomorrow.... read more

Kings Canyon to Ayers Rock From one beauty to the next – we departed Watarrka National Park and set out for Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. On arrival we set up the camper at Ayers Rock Campground ($36/night unpowered site), then headed for The Olgas (Kata Tjuta). The Olgas are best described as 36 steep sided domes of conglomerate rock, with the highest dome around 546meters above the plain – 200 metres higher than Ayers Rock. The Olgas are about 32km’s west of the big red rock, and we managed to fit in the Valley of the Winds walk before sunset. The walk took 7.4km’s, passing between the magnificent high domes and through creek beds past Karingana lookout. With the sun heading towards the horizon we headed to the sunset lookout to admire Ayers Rock in ... read more
