Lorenza and I decided to take a car trip west of the mountains, heading along the Bells Line of Road to Bathurst, via Lithgow. From Bathurst we did a quick tour of the country north of Bathurst, toward Sofala and the tiny village of Peel. We then went south to the village of Rockley. Our route took us through rolling hills and undulating grazing country, typical of the western plains district. The country is looking in great shape after some good falls of rain in the last few months. The village of Rockley is about 240km west of Sydney. Not much has changed in Rockley since the early 1900’s, it really is a snapshot of what rural life was like back in those days. Rockley is now listed as a historic village by the National Trust. ... read more

Up early to go to church, had a nice lunch afterwards then we shot off to the Marrickville centre as they were advertising for staff at the Aldi. We applied for the lofty heights of a shelf stacker and a cashiers job. That evening we went into the city to go to Tumbalong park as part of the Sydney festival they had a free concert of fire. When we got there people had obviously been there all day set out with their blankets and food and brollies. Unfortunately we had none of these and it had started to drizzle (the fine rain that wets you through). So we got a couple of free magazines to sit on, found a nice spot and sat for 2 hours waiting for it to start. Just as it started a ... read more

Hi All Hmm haven't really got that much to tell you all as the last two weeks have really been all about finding a job, which I now have managed to do! Hurrah! It’s a receptionist job in a real estate place! The only downside is that it’s not in the city but at least I’ll be earning money at long last! The 5th of Jan we spent looking at houses and managed to find two bedrooms in two houses next to each other which was really lucky! We have to share a bedroom between two which isn’t great but I think everywhere here on a short term basis is the same! It’s annoying though as you know they’re making an absolute packet!! The room for me and Hannah wasn’t available until the 10th so we ... read more

All up quite early to prepare our picnic, which was quite impressive, for the day out. We drove over the Harbour bridge which made a nice change to see a different view of Sydney and the opera house. We arrived at our destination, Ku-ring-gai chase national park, to find that the visitors centre was closed so we drove on into the park to Bobbin head by scenic riverside where we had our picnic. As we set off in the scorching sun to do the board walk through the mangrove trees we saw a monitor (not a tv screen!) but a very big lizard. It was a nice pleasant walk. As the tide had gone out there were loads of crabs on the mud. Along the way we saw various lizards and skinks (lizard). We started another ... read more

We're finally in Australia! 22 hours later on a plane, with an hours delay at the British airport, a halfhour stop at the Bankok airport, and what seemed like hours waiting in various lines...we are here! I'll start by wrapping up our stay in London. Kristen and I ended up going to the 'Elucid Camel'our first night for a pint of beer then came home and crashed. That night we slept in bunkbeds in a room with 6 other people, a girl from Australia, girl from New York, girl from Italy, and guy from Denmark. We all stayed up chatting for a little bit before calling it a night. Unfortunately there was a snorer among us, and some had set their alarms at 6am to leave for an early flight. Kristen and I got up around ... read more

Contrary to a statement made in a previous blog, we’ve not actually organized the big hike over the Harbour Bridge yet. The starting cost is about a hundred pounds per person for a night time walk at 3am, and increases rapidly from there, so we reckoned it would be a good idea to take a stroll across the pedestrian footpath first to get an idea of what we’d be paying out for. So after brekker one morning, we headed out to the Rocks area, which is right next to Circular Quay where we catch the ferry (and where we spent New Years Eve) to start the climb up the stairs to the walkway on the bridge. The bridge is actually quite wide, and there are designated areas for cars, trains, bikes, lorries, and pedestrians. You can’t ... read more

Now the trek down to Melbourne has begun! Since my last entry, I talked to a few other travellers, and decided that at this time of year, it would be better to head down and see Melbourne than to jump into the excruciating heat of upper Queensland in the summer! AND Melbourne has the Australian Open starting on the 16th, and how fantastic would it be to go to my first tennis grandslam?!? So that's how my plans went upside down, and I decided to take a train from Sydney down to a coastal town called Kiama. The ride took a few hours, and when I arrived, I was dumped into the first major rainfall I had experienced in Australia! Luckily, however, the hostel was just around the block from the train station. The hostel was ... read more

We’ve mentioned before that one of the things we were desperate to get to Sydney for was to do some shopping. We’re glad we waited as this city has a brilliant array of high street stores, malls, stalls & boutiques. We’ve spent some cash on new jeans for us both, new trainers for Alan, new tops for Shaz and some bath bombs for relaxation purposes (its so exciting that Paula’s apartment has a bath - such luxury!). There are some gorgeous shopping centres here - one in particular is called the Queen Victoria Building or QVB for short, which is located on George Street in the heart of the city. It’s a fabulous late 19th century affair which takes up an entire block, and also has some underground cavernous passageways beneath the roads outside. Décor wise ... read more

12/13.01.06 After a fun-filled week with Andrew, I flew back to Sydney and the next day I caught a 5 hour train to Tamworth. A week early for the infamous Country Music Festival began, I intended to get a job to see me through the festival. I had completed my Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) course to assist me, but I ended up with a position that involved giving air-brush tattoos to the public during the festival. The days were long but fun and I made sure I made up for the work by partying hard in the evenings! My accomodation during the festival was a bunkbed in the open-air car-port of the YHA. I didn't meet many fellow backpackers, as I generally came in after them and got up before them! Before the festival, the ... read more
