For the first time we travelled to Australia via China...Shanghai. Mostly to break up the long flights but also to get a brief feel for the possibility of a more extensive tour in the future. The 15 hour flight was painful but getting a good night's sleep then having a personalized tour of the city made up for it. Franz Joseph glacier

an hour long trek in damp conditions (the only day so far) for a sight of the head of the glacier.

Okarito beach art

a relaxing change from the bustle of Queenstown to the tiny village with no services.

Christchurch earthquake damage

6 years later and still looking like a disaster area. We dropped off Carl & Jody and prepared for NZ part 2.

Denniston

site of abandoned coal mining and the incredible 'race' that lowered coal cars hundreds of meters down the mountainside.

Westport

A pretty little West Coast town where we spent 2 days.

Cape Foulwind light

The Cape was named by James Cook in 1770. Obviously he had a bad experience here.

New Zealand fur seal

Near Punakaiki, West Coast.
