AUSTRALIA, SYDNEY; Australia, land of open vastness. Land of bush, heavy thick bush. Red rock and bright colored sand landscapes to match. Endless beaches, picturesque harbours......................... Melbourne, the Grand Prix and St. Patrick's day; The Saint Patrick’s day ‘Irish holiday,’ Port Melbourne was the word. Squeezing onto a packed tram, the locals were flocking to the emerald bars. Minutes earlier a frantic eleventh hour search for green hair spray proved fruitful. I teamed-up with Gerry, Kieran and Joe, Irish friends living in Sydney. A line longer than a flight path greeted us at Sullivan's............................................................... So yesterday, Emily and I went on the Bondi to Coogee walk. It is a walk along the coast from Bondi Beach to Coogee beach. Emily and I walked it from Coogee to Bondi which was a workout because it was uphill the whole way! It was very beautiful though and a really fun time. Enjoy the pictures! Tuesday night Jenna, her friends Rachel and Wynter, Emily and I went and saw Hamlet at the Opera House. It was a really good show although it was pretty long. The opera house was actually pretty old inside but it was really cool to walk outside and see the beautiful Harbor Bridge. My future plans are New Zealand tomorrow until July 11th then home the 13th late at night. Then, I'll probably sleep for the next two days ... read more

So i got to the airport in one peice after my last blog and the check in desks were closed and so i got chatting to this scottish woman who now lives in Oz and two other travelers James from england and John from Ireland. John was heading to Auckland first and then Oz and James had been traveling and then was going to Oz with a nursing job and a 4 year visa ahead of him. So check in eventually opened and i had fun and games as the check in guy kept making calls but did not tell me what the issue was and i had also asked for an upgrade or extra leg room and neither request was fullfilled, but it was worth a try. The guys waited on me and i eventually ... read more

After flying back into Sydney from Parkes, we were keen to regain possession of our beloved passports, so we headed into the city. We got to the Indian embassy to find a scum of anxious looking travelers (ourselves included!), but within 30 minutes we were out of there, visas in hand. That night we got some awesome pizza from Base in Randwick delivered, easily the best I've ever had, and headed down to the park to watch Shakespeare's Twelfth Night being performed. It was fantastic to sit with beer in one hand, pizza in the other in the open air, trying to figure out what the hell was going on. In the end it all came together (kind of) and the audience were clearly impressed. It was a tad unnerving when the more educated members of ... read more

I leave in less than two days and I am so excited. I don't know what to expect and I am ready for the surprise. I will be heading out of L.A. at midnight on Wednesday, February 27th and arriving in Sydney Friday, February 29th. The flight will be long, but well worth it! I will spend 4 days in Cairns, Australia for orientation. I will update my blog with pictures after this short orientation. I will finally make it to my new home in Coogee Australia on Monday, March 3rd! I will be living at 136 Brook Street - about 3 blocks from the beach! I have not met my roommates and don't even know what the apartment looks like! It will all be new and exciting - can't wait. I'm sure I will miss ... read more

So we arrived in Queenstown Airport all packed for Australia, got to the desk, handed over our passports and the attendant raised her eyebrows. "Where are your visas for Australia?"....Hmmm, a good question indeed, as we were assured by Trailfinders that we didn't need them. I also had a feeling (that was subsequently proved false) that Lonely Planet was with Trailfinders on that one. A bit too much adrenaline for our liking, but it was all ok as we handed over some dosh and we were sorted, electronic visas in the cyberspace back pocket. As Simon was in Tasmania, Row picked us up from the airport and whisked us to Coogee for a drink on their apartment balcony. The weather was nice, as joggers plodded past and the sea crashed against the cliffs. We had some ... read more

The sun is out (sort of) so Sarah and I finally did the walk today. We started in Coogee because another girl from my hostel, Mel, wanted to go to Coogee, so we all got the bus together. The bus broke down! The walk was nice, we stopped lots along the way. The weather didn't look great in the morning so Sarah didn't take her bikini but then the sun came out and we really wanted to go on the beach and have a swim in the sea but we couldn't so we're coming back tomorrow! ... read more

We have been in Australia now for 4 days. We arrived Friday night and stayed in the Sydney Mercure Airport Hotel as it was late and following a long flight. It was a nice hotel and comfy after the journey but a bit pricey and not much around. On Saturday 2nd Feb we got the train from the airport to Sydney Central and checked into the Wake Up hostel on Pitt Street. We threw our bags in the room and went to the Paddys markets. Really busy and full of Chinese people. We then went for a wlk and by some bizarre coincidence we saw a friend of ours who lives an hour and a half away in Wolongong. We had not arranged to meet him or anything! We then crashed out back at the hostel. ... read more

Four weeks into it and being a handyman in Sydney is taking me to amazing places. On week one, I was schmoozing with the guns of the Australia Rugby Union. Week two saw me sharing the halls with John Howard who, before a stunning election defeat on Nov. 24th, was Australia’s Prime Minister for the last 11 years. Then in week three I spent time with Juan Mann, better known worldwide as the Free Hug Guy and whose You Tube video has become an internet sensation. Week four was relatively sedate, but still found me enjoying lunch amid the sand and surf of Coogee beach. In short, life is rather spectacular. To be fair though, I didn’t officially meet Mr. Howard. He was in his district office, in a building owned by Gazcorp, and I was ... read more

5th December - had an uneventful flight from Hong Kong. Thought we'd baggsied some good seats with extra legroom, but turned out to be a pain in the @ss and couldn't get comfy - not much sleep had. Landed Sydney @ approx 7am, had to go through immigration and then get our passports stamped with our working holiday visas, entitling us to remain in the country and be eligible for work for the next 12 months. After going through passport control, we had to join the queue of travellers wanting their passports stamped - Cevan said he felt the oldest by miles! Sniffer dogs were checking out suspicious looking people and bags, wouldn;t come near us, so we put that down to the fact we hadn't washed for a number of hours! We then collected our ... read more
