Sadly for Chris and Matt they had the unfortunate dilemma of either keeping their jobs or going to see the fireworks at harbour bridge?! As money and the need to earn is vital for our stay here they chose to work. So that left Colin and I to go and see what has always been hyped as the best fireworks in the world and one of the first parties of the year down at a place called Mrs Macqueries point which looks directly at the Opera house and Harbour bridge. We set off at about 3pm (which was a bit later than we had wanted to leave) in order to get ourselves a good view. We arrived there to find no alcohol was aloud to be brought into the gardens, so that sucked a bit but we headed on in anyway with no alcohol with us, it was free entry and then we could got a pink band that enabled us to buy beer or wine from one of the stands. I knew that Nat (my bro's mate, Wynnie's sister) was there so I arranged for us to meet up with her so we could drop off our bags and go
for a walk around. The queue for the beer tent was insanely long as you would expect, so we just went off for a walk around to see if there was anywhere with a better view than where Nat was sitting. It was SO busy down there but the place was buzzing in the anticipation of a huge party. People were already on their way to full intoxication, mainly the many irish people that were there. One group of Irish lads were singing at the top of their voice's much to everyones amusement and caused everyone to clap and cheer after each of their songs, excellent for the atmosphere. On our walk around we found that the best views had been taken with towel to towel areas on the grass where people had obvioulsy been there since the early hours. There were also hundreds of tripods tied to the crowd barriers where the japanese were waiting to capture with their digital eyes. As we walked back to where Nat and her friends were sitting I saw a girl called Stacey that I knew from Lincoln Univeristy sitting in a very good spot on a hill looking pretty much directly at
the Opera house, barr a couple of big palm trees.... it's not what you know...... So I went over to say hello and see if there was any space around her and the people she was with to sit, they said they would make space for 2 small bums on their towels, brilliant. We went to get some food and beer and queued for 40mins for 4 VB's and a bottle of wine (VB $5 a can, wine $25, but you get $5 back if you returned the bottle!) Then grabbed our stuff and went to move to where Stacey was sitting. We now had a great view, alcohol and a place to set up my own tripod. They were all very impressed that I had brought a tripod with me and then all wanted to use it as all their pictures were coming out blurry as the sun had set behind the skyscrapers and night time fell. Two english lads then appear in front and began trying to start a Mexican wave by doing the 'slow to fast' clap thing then getting everyone to wave their arms in the air, it worked to an extent but petered out along the hill. I was concentrating so much on the filming I didn't really take many photos. The 9 o'clock fireworks began as the buzzing crowd clapped, cheered and whistled... they were amazing!!!! They lasted for about 20mins and were incredible which then built the anticipation for the midnight ones even more. As they finished the boats anchored in the harbour beeped their horns and the crowd once again cheered and whistled at them. I went to get some more wine and queued for a good 45/50mins coming away with 2 bottles of sparkling wine. We sat and waited for the midnight fireworks and didn't have to stand up or even move when they began... WOW!!!!! In all honsety they were by far the most amazing fireworks I have ever seen, coming from all angles, the ones shooting off the harbour bridge definately the most impressive! Again I was doing lots of filming so didn't get any photos, sorry! When they finished everyone began to leave as we did as we were due to go to HomeBar where Matt works. We got changed from board shorts, vest and thongs into some more sophisticated threads and went to Darling Harbour where we sat and enjoyed the aftermath of the huge event, not returning home til the very early hours!!
