Before getting to Mount Warning/Murwillumbah I spent 5 days in Byron Bay. Tom booked his trip up the East Coast and then I got down to some serious relaxing. I waved goodbye to Tom the following morning and then I was on my own again. In fact I met Sam and Emma at the hostel who I had met on the Cape Rienga trip in NZ. They left the following day but I met some good people in Byron and had a good time. The Beach Hotel right on the beach (obviously) is a good one. We also took a trip up to Nimbin, a lovely village in the mountains. It is a big hippy hang out and every shop sells smoking paraphanalia - the police just turn a blind eye. I left Byron Bay once ... read more

On our final night in Sydney, our cell companion was a friendly local lad called Jason. That was friendly, until he went to sleep, at which point he started to burp, fart and sleep talk a little too aggressively for our liking. This prompted us to ditch the dorms and their unknown quantities, for our newly acquired tent (or travelling tent as it says on the cover) at our next stop; Port Macquarie, or Port as its affectionately known by the Aussies. The campground held pride of place between the centre of town and townbeach and was home to tents and RVs bigger than our tiny flat in Lansdowne. We tried to hide our little tent off in a corner but to no avail, I think we were the laughing stock of the place. We were ... read more

Though Byron Bay had an undeniably relaxing feel, it was a struggle for a non-beach lover like myself to find enough to do. And with my calendar telling me I had barely 2 weeks left on the continent, the thought of frittering those away through sheer idleness made me realise it was time for my 11th road trip in Australia. Though Byron has only vestiges of a formerly pervasive hippie culture, that spirit is still bursting with rude health in the village of Nimbin further inland. Nimbin was the site of the 1973 Aquarius festival, the first celebration of the counterculture movement in Australia. With much of Nimbin's reputation concentrating on the ready availability of soft drugs in the place, I arrived half-expecting it to be under a fug of pot smoke. It wasn't, but a ... read more

Oct 24. Byron then Mullum for another go. Again X. Bloke bought me tea. Went to car - no go. Found mechanic 300 meters. They towed by rope. I had gotten timing belt in Esperance for Nullarbor crossing. Belt had been noisy for a long time and the last few days really complaining. Fixed $80! Encountered Little Corella on way to pick up car. White, short white crest. Bare blue eye skin. Beer. Oct 25. Mullum - the dark side. Shop owner called police. Cop brutish. I ignored. Then tall bloke red cap who'd been hassling me for days broke flag stick and peeled off sticker from car. I stuck another after he'd left. He came back and peeled off second. When owner, who requested sticker returned, I stuck third and he drove off. Gave 'Echo' ... read more

It always takes longer than you expect to pack up. Sylvia thought we would be away by 0900; I thought 1100 was more realistic. We finally hit the road at 1300! The five hour drive to Macksville was uneventful but tedious. The downside was that we arrived in the dark and the temperature had dropped to 7 degrees (all temperatures in this blog are in Celsius). We managed to get the camper set up in the dark without too much trouble but were freezing by the time we clambered inside. Wearing most of our clothes, we went straight to bed to keep warm, heads covered in a beanie to keep them from freezing. When we woke up at 0700 the next day, the temperature was 1 degree and it was a real struggle to get out ... read more

I planned to stay only a couple of nights in Bellingen but I loved the place so much I ended up staying five. There was simply so much to do around the hostel & such a great crowd staying there that a longer stay was needed to do the place justice. On one day a group of us went for a long bike ride through the countryside to a place called the Promised Land, which had a stunning little stream running through it called Never Never Creek. The place really was incredible, the water was so clear you could drink it (literally) & the surrounding countryside was breathtaking. We spent the whole day exploring the promised land and only then did we get an appreciation of how it got its name. On my last day in ... read more
