North America July 31st 2001

We anchored offshore of the island owned by Royal Caribbean, Coco Cay. This is a coral island, and the cruise line has imported sand for the beaches and made many other improvements. Lisa and Nancy stayed on the beach while the boys and I went snorkeling offshore. There were many fish about, including a few stingrays.... read more

Over Spring Break 2001 we visited my sister Sue, husband Rob, and their kids Alyssa and Brendan, in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. We went to Sanibel Island and then to Disney World and Universal Studios. As summer approached we didn’t have any vacation plans. We had sworn off road trips, but as I contemplated the map of the U.S. I realized that we had been to every state except for Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Alaska. This would mean at least one more road trip; but we decided to cater to the kids activities and not stay at B&Bs. So we decided to go camping and stay at nice hotels with swimming pools. I check the internet and made reservations for the campground at Bear Head Lake State Park, near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. 28 ... read more

Most of my adult life I've sailed boats and enjoyed being out on the water. I've owned a variety of sail boats and and been the member of two yacht clubs. For twenty years I raced on Thursday nights with Jim at the Jubilee Yacht Club. Unfortunately I only have one picture of me sailing.... read more

We are now in Canada, country of a million maple leaves. They are everywhere - backpacks, cars, streets, postcards etc. You name it, it has a maple on it! Upon leaving Port Angeles in the States to drive up to Vancouver, Canada, we had a slight mishap. We decided to check the oil before setting off, and decided to top it up a little. I started to pour the "oil" in and then exclaimed "Cool! It's bright green!" before realising that instead of oil, we had filled up with anti-freeze - whoooops! This has got to be one of our dizziest car mistakes yet! Luckily it all ended well with an oil change in the local garage - phew! Luna lives! Spent a few days in Vancouver doing errands like getting our visa for China sorted ... read more

Greeting from Port Angeles, Washington State! The last time I wrote was in Mexico over a month ago. Since getting to the States things have been totally hectic. We flew into San Francisco on June 6th and by midnight that day we had bought ourselves a car! It’s our first car (for all of us) so we are quite attached to her! We affectionately call her "Luna" as we bought her on a full moon. Being our first car, however, we’ve had a few minor teething problems. Knowing that she leaked oil, we decided we had better check it regularly. We flipped the bonnet, only to find we couldn’t then lift it - no- one told us there was another catch under the bonnet!!! The roads here also took some getting used to. Several times we’ve ... read more

Gameday in Los Angeles. Game six of the final series LA Lakers - Philadelphia Sixers 2001. The setting is ideal for a good time. Warm and sunny, party on the rooftop in LA. Barbecue and beer. The excitement of the game does however not mount to any hights. The Sixers have nothing really to put up against the Lakers. Shaq, Kobe, and the others land the second consecutive NBA title in LA. The Spanish guy co-hosting the party shares my grudges against the Lakers. Right after the final bell rings he opens the window and screams in despair: "Philadelphia!". Despite the sometimes unprovoked, meaningless violence prevalent in the US, this can pass by unnoticed. Just out of curiosity, although I know the answer very well, I ask the dude from Madrid: "Would you do that in ... read more

After my sophmore year at UWEC Jordan, Brock, Jeff, Nate and I went on a road trip to the east coast where we went to 5 different MLB stadiums. We were in NYC for about 3 days and saw the Yankees and the Mets. We also got to walk around Manhattan a couple of days and we got to see the MLB Hall of Fame in Cooperstown which is located in upstate NY. My favorite part of the whole trip may have been when we were approaching NYC and we could see the skyline from like 40 min away . . . when we got to Manhattan we looked like fish out of water with 5 guys packed into a small 94 Dodge Shadow with Wisconsin plates.... read more

Our holiday was coming to an end - only another three days and we would be back on the plane heading home for home and work .We were not looking forward to our flight which was set for 6.30 in the evening. I dont like flying at night and although you can go to sleep I dreaded the long night with no view from the windows. We hoped to enjoy our last few days and travelled via Galena a small town in Illinois to Chicago where we intended spending a few days sightseeing again and having a last few days with our relatives.. Galena is known for its history and its association with the war general Ulysses S Grant. Once one of the most important cities in the state, Galena was the hub on the Mississippi ... read more
