Day 5

147 miles

Today we decided to ride south to Hot Springs. We drove down La Crosse Street to Omaha street, let me tell you La Crosse street is a very dangerous street for motorcycles. Every time we ride it we are almost hit and today a run away grocery cart darted right out in front of me, where it came from I have know idea. Just as I was going around the cart and got back into the right lane the care ahead hit their brakes and I had to go around them, jeepers creepers we risk life and limb just to leave town.

We took Main street to Jackson road to Sheridan Lake Road. This is a beautiful back road to Hwy 385 and the lake area is gorgeous. They have campgrounds their and we have decided if we ever buy an RV we would stay there. Sheridan was a town the was covered by the lake when they built the dam during the 1930's. A whole town is under the lake. Just outside of the this area we saw a momma deer and her baby suckling in the field. Today we saw the most

wildlife since we got here. We thought maybe the noise of the Harleys was keeping them away but I guess not.

We continued on 385 South where we passed Prairie Berry Winery that makes Red Ass Rhubarb wine. Steve and I are stopping there tomorrow so I can get a bottle. We were suppose to turn a on side road but somehow missed it so we just followed the signs to Hot Springs and rode through parts of Wind Cavern National Park. Here we saw bison, deer and a very brave coyote standing right next to the road. I wanted to take a picture but Steve told me I am nuts and to keep moving.

We got to Hot Springs, which is much smaller than you would think and wento the visitor center, here is a hint, always go to the visitor centers. The staff there are trained to tell you what there is for attractation, accomodations and eating/shopping. Our host suggested we walk along the river that the hot springs feed and see the waterfall. We did just this and you can see a picture of me standing in the river. The temp is a balmy 88.2

degrees. After our short walk we were hungry so we took another suggestion and at at Bumper's Grub and Pub. The food was tasty and service was fine, 4 motorcycles for both.

Our whole purpose of going to Hot Springs was to swim in the Evans Plunge pool. This pool has been there for over hundred years and is built around the river. They have an inside and outside pool and hot tubs, jacuzzi and work out center. The cost is $12 per person for to swim and then an addtional 3.50 if you want to use the hot tub, which I would highly recommend. We had to rent towels because Steve and I never thought about bringing towels in our packs. They cost an extra $2.00 to rent. We changed into our bathing suits and decided to sit outside first because we have not had much warmth or sun this week and this is truly our first hot day at 89 degrees. Eventually we meandered into the indoor pool, all I can say that this is an experience that everyone should do if they are in this area. Let me stress this again, this is not to be

missed! The bottom of the pool is river rocks and the water is clear and has a small current. The water is all new water in an hour due to the river pumping through it. There are supposed medicinal properties to the river, which I don't know if that is true but I can tell you that Steve and I had aching muscles when we went in and were pain free and relaxed leaving. Do this attraction!

We were going to ride north on hwy 87 but decided we were tired and just wanted to get back to the hotel. We drove up Hwy 79 to Rapid City and went to our hotel. We did not want to ride again so we walked over to the Boston Sport Bar and Restaurant and had dinner. It was nice to be able to have a couple of cocktails, Steve and I don't drink while we ride. Our rule about eating out when we are on vacation is we won't go anywhere that we can go in our hometown. Usually that rules our chain restaurants but we don't have a Boston Restaurant in Appleton so we could go.

Tomorrow we are

going to head back to Deadwood because we enjoyed it so much and Wild Bill days are starting, then explore downtown Rapid City, which we have not done yet. The hotel Alex Johnson has a bar on the rooftop and there are a lot of nice little shops. We also have to do laundry because Friday morning we are heading back to Wisconsin. Stay tuned for more fun.
