Having a snack on the road Sorry it has taken us SO long to update. We are going to pile them on today. Anyway, from the coast we turned inland. Our first stop was the Sequoia National Forest, still in California. It is like the Redwood Forest, but full of giant Sequoia trees, which were just as impressive. It just so happens that this is where the LARGEST TREE IN THE WORLD is!! It is a red sequoia named The General Sherman Tree; 53,000 cubic feet, with a circumference of 160 feet. The hike down to it was over a mile long and steep, which was challenging at 8,000 feet! Even more impressive than the tree however, were the tarantulas! It was mating season in the park, and the male brown tarantulas were out walking around, looking for females. We saw one almost every 50 yards. All the scenery was stunning. Our next stop was Death Valley Nat Park. We spent two two nights and three days playing in the desert! It really is like being on another planet. We climbed sand dunes, hiked around incredible rock formations, spied on tarantulas hiding in holes, and even made friends with a gray fox! We saw him on the

Vineyards in California side of the road, and when we slowed to look at him he ran over! He wouldn't get too close, but stuck right next to the van until we drove away. The second night we stayed there in rained! It was shocking since they only get less than two inches of rain a year there. We also stopped in an area know as the "Devils Golf Course" which was a vast expanse of crystal salt formations, and Bad Water Basin; the lowest point in the Western Hemisphere at -282 feet. It was all very different and beautiful, but by the fourth night of camping we were ready for Las Vegas and a shower!
