Mom and I right before Joel and I left saying goodbyes! Hello! So...the trip has begun!! Joel and I left Mom's house in Burnsville (after a big goodbye and some tears) on September 26th, and drove through Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, and Missouri. The van is all packed with clothes, camping gear, books, a cooler, games, and more. We took the two middle seats out so there is a huge amount of room! We stopped and had lunch at this wonderful hole-in-the-wall liquor store/southern-style cafe in Nashville, TN. It was delicious! The drive through Kentucky was really beautiful; we were doing it right at sunset and driving parallel to a stunning thunderstorm. The sky and wind were breathtaking. We were trying to make it to Kansas City but decided to pull over at 2am with still a few hours left to go. We spent our first night in the van in a very comfortable travel center, and got up early the next morning to finish it up.
In Kansas City we had plans to stay with our artist friend Zach, at his warehouse studio/apartment. He lives in the historic warehouse district, in a giant space with 7 studios and 5 other roommates (all artists). It was something straight out of an Andy

Inside of the van. Warhol picture; eclectic art everywhere, a puppy running around, not much furniture, and lots of space. Very cool! Almost everyday we grabbed some coffee and a bite to eat at a privately-owned coffee shop/restaurant/music venue called YJ's that was right around the corner from the warehouse. It was originally opened in 1927 and had a wonderfully hip charm to it. We also made it to the Jazz museum, and on our last night caught some live jazz downtown at 18th and Vine in the historic Jazz district. All in all Kansas City had a great vibe. It looks like a big city, but has that spacious mid-western feel to it. We headed out of town on September 30th and started the 9 hour drive to Denver.
