Harry holds his head up.Harry holds his head up.Harry holds his head up.

But just barely.
Happy Father’s Day! We started out of Smuggler’s Cove under an overcast sky and awakening seas. By noon, the seas had risen to 2-4 foot swells, the sky had cleared and the sun was shining, and we saw two whales! They were as beautiful as those National Geographic photos say they are.

On the downside, Harry spent the last half of the day struggling (and losing) with sea sickness. He was able to change sails and handle the anchoring, but other than that, he was sitting, staring at the horizon. Peter and I stood our watches at the helm while Harry tried to hold his head up. I recognized that if Peter wasn’t here, I would have helmed the boat for about ten hours through the heaviest seas we’ve had. I know - it’s only day 2. But truly, if the seas never get worse than yesterday, we’ll still have been through something tough. Winds picked up to 35 knots by the afternoon and we logged the sea swells at 10-12 feet, coming at us constantly for over an hour, and nearly constantly for the rest of the day. The water was flying at us over the dodger, soaking

the cockpit (and the helmsperson).

We anchored in Cojo Anchorage in 20-25 knot winds. It was a much better place to stay the night, without the rolling waves, and the wind calmed by late evening.

It was a very hard day. Very physically exhausting, trying to hold steady in constant movement over ten hours. Also, being out in the elements all day is really draining. I hadn’t expected this trip to be such a slog. I knew I wouldn’t be in my heels, but still.

High seas.High seas.
High seas.

It's hard to capture the reality of the water on the camera; the angle and height of the wave in front of the boat gives a little indication of our ride.

I'm getting a pretty good image and am getting a little nauseous. Don't know how you managed! Hope it's smoother sailing from here on in.
