Rest Area in Nebraska Thursday April 29, 2021
Today’s blog is dedicated to my sister Jenny Lowry because as I stated yesterday she said to us, “Ya’ll are the only people I know who can have fun at a rest area.” Today all the pictures I snapped were taken at rest areas. These pics are for you sis. We drove from Lincoln, NE to Green River, WY today a good 10 hour drive…well that is unless you are travelling with us and we stop a lot for pictures. The drive on I-80 across Nebraska was very pretty. Eastern Nebraska is rich rolling farmland as far as you can see. The dirt was so fertile…Karen Negley we could grow a great garden here! The beautiful Platte River parallels the freeway for much of the way. Possible that the farmers get their irrigation from this river. Here are some fun facts about Nebraska: There are 2.75 million cattle on feed the most in the nation (Jan 2019), Nearly 80,000 miles of rivers and streams cross NE, I-80 crosses NE for 455 miles (all of which we travelled today), and there is an increase in elevation from east to west of 4584 feet.

Rest Area in Nebraska (which has a speed limit of 80 mph in Wyoming) our drive continues on to Green River. We started to see mountains then white stuff on the ground. SNOW!!! The freeway crosses the Continental Divide several times and we were at elevations between 7000-8450 ft. The landscape started becoming more arid as we got to western Nebraska and then drastically changed in Wyoming. The snow capped mountains became visible as we got close to Cheyenne. They were stunning! I have always loved the mountains and relate to John Muir’s statement “The Mountains are calling, I must go.” There will be more mountains in several states during this trip but the first sighting made me smile. The rock formations around Green River are incredible. The Sandstone and Shale that make up these rocks have experienced years of erosion. Many fish fossils have been found in this area, supporting the theory that this arid land was once covered by water. Flaming Gorge is a short distance from here but we do not have time to visit on this trip.
