Mississippi River - Gateway to the West
Let the adventure begin!!! The first official day of the trip starting at my brother Jeff’s house in Carmel, IN and driving to York, NE. We feel like the first pioneers riding west in their covered wagons, except that we have a comfortable truck with all the luxuries, sleeping in hotels and eating in restaurants. Ok so we are nothing like the first pioneers except enjoying the scenery. I have always felt that the journey to our destination is as exciting as the destination itself. There is so much to see in our beautiful country and you just need to slow down to see. Once while traveling to Alabama, Kevin, Nathan (my cousin) and I stopped at a rest area in Elkmont. They have a Saturn rocket, lots of info about space travel and a Korean and Vietnam War Memorial. I called my sister Jenny, who was also traveling to the Gulf Shores, and told her about our stop and she said “ I believe ya’ll are the only people who could have fun at a rest area.” I took that as a compliment. Today while driving to NE we needed to stop somewhere for our picnic lunch. We thought we

would try finding a park on the Mississippi River (I regard this as the gateway to the West). We stopped in the town of Hannibal, MO. This little town also happens to be the home of Samuel Clemens or better known as Mark Twain. We had lunch right on the river then walked up to the town. It is old, quaint and full of Mark Twain museums. We walked by Twain’s boyhood home, the drugstore where the Clemens lived while Samuel’s father got his finances together, the Becky Thatcher home and the law office of Samuel Clemens father. This cute town is all about Mark Twain they even make a Mark Twain root beer of which we purchased a 4 pack. Wish we had more time to take in all the sights. I have been to all but 2 states and today I have now visited one of those! Nebraska! Yes Pastor Rick, I am in your home state.

God saw all that He had made and it was very good… Genesis 1:31
