Travelling from Platzburg in New York over the border into Canada with no hitches. Only the customs officer asking why we had chosen this particular crossing as it was from the back roads of New York state, we explained that we did not to use the freeways, we just travel the country roads. As it was quite early we had an easy drive into the city of Montreal, spent the day in this lovely city. Enjoying the casual pace of the place, however when leaving we caught up with the traffic. We quickly got out of the city onto smaller roads and travelled along the road which follows the Saint Lawrence River, and stopped at a small town called Prescott. We were so fortunate to find a place which offered small self contained cottages, so we ... read more

September, 2010 After years of hearing about beautiful Door County, Wisconsin we, along with Rod and Mary, finally spent a weekend exploring some of what Door County has to offer. Our first stop was Whitefish Dunes State Park. If you have ever been to Indiana Dunes State Park or Sleeping Dunes in Michigan, you will be wondering “where are the dunes?” This park was nothing like what we expected. There is a beach, picnic area, eight hiking trails, and a nature center. With finding a lighthouse on our minds, we drove north to Bailey’s Harbor. After a delicious lunch, we made our way to Cana Island Lighthouse, just out of town. There was no parking, and admission to the island was $4. We walked around the grounds, toured the light keeper’s house, now a gift shop ... read more

August 22, 2010 On day two of our Door County adventure we drove, along with our friends Rod & Mary, to Gills Rock, the jumping off point to catch the ferry to Washington Island. We opted for a package that included a 90 minute guided tram tour of the island. We should have taken the car over on the ferry. It was cheaper, and touring on our own would have been better than being at the mercy of the Viking Train Tram Tour. Be that as it may, we saw an ostrich farm (additional $1). That is, everyone on the tram but me. I refused on principle to participate in this blatant money making scheme. We also stopped at Stavkirke (an old Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church), the Washington Island Farm Museum, and Schoolhouse Beach (mostly rocks). ... read more

August 22, 2010 Not all of the lighthouses of Door County, Wisconsin are easily visited. On our tour we found the lighthouse at the Coast Guard Station to be closed. We saw the lighthouse on Plum Island (from a distance) as we rode the Washington Island ferry. We did not see the lighthouse on Pilot Island, and never even attempted to reach the one on Rock Island State Park. Not to be completely defeated in our quest, we did manage to visit Cana Island Lighthouse. Cana Island Lighthouse is located a short drive north of Bailey's Harbor on the Lake Michigan shore side of Door County. Cana Island is open sunrise to sunset, while the lighthouse is open from 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. If you are traveling in a motor home, avoid this lighthouse at ... read more
