3 Class V rapids 6 Class IV rapids and a but load of Class II and III. Sissys stay home. The boys took it on and had a blast. That said I was scared #$%less. Photos will have to be posted after the trip as they are on a waterproof camera but we jumped from cliffs. floated the river (intentionally) and paddled until we couldn't do it anymore. One thing that does motivate you is ROCKS. Big rocks and when your guide say swim left if you fall out on this rapids because on the right they call it "meat grinder" and they don't go in after you. I found out afterwards. He wasn't kidding. The Rivermen were great. Of 4 boats the only person who fell out was our guide during a class V. I ... read more

Up at 5AM after a short night of the wind howling and rain driving into the side of the house. After ten days being off work getting ready for the hike this was the worst weather we had seen. Things didn't look much better when I checked the computer weather picture, rain from WV back to IN. Threw the packs in the car and pulled out of the drive at 5:30. Ran down to Mansville and picked up PJ a dear friend who is driving our car back home after we get to Harpers Ferry. Driving down I-81 the wind and rain abated little and we were considering spending the night at a hostel. We arrived in Harpers Ferry about 3:30PM then headed straight for the Trail HQ. Did some looking around, took the start photos ... read more

Hello All. CC and I will be returning to the trail on or about 1 May for the remaining 1,164 miles to Mt Katahdin, Maine. I will be doing my normal Blogging and will try to get the pictures in from last year before we start. This year we will be adding one piece of gear you will find interesting. It is a SPOT device. You will be able to track us daily on a Google Earth map. I will post the link here once we have the device up and running. I will send our location at lunch time and the end of every day we are on the trail. Hope everyone's winter went well and both of us are excited to finish this last leg of our trek.... read more

Today was crazy. Getting out of bed was hard, to start off with. And the showerhead came up right to my head, so I got a lot of practice with the limbo while rinsing. This means that Kyle only washed his stomach- not is hair ;) Work at the venue was crazy and no one was happy. Kyle bore the brunt of it- it was mostly his stuff out of his control that went bad. No comments. I spent the morning going all around town looking for postcards. In Portsmouth, they have a flood wall that someone painted murals on. Great. But the only postcards in town have them on it, and they cost between fifty cents and a buck. I’m not paying that much! The show went fine, with only a few minor problems that ... read more

i used to want a stainless steel refrigerator. now i live in a big albeit aluminum refrigerator/freezer, with a STRONG emphasis on FREEZER!!!! last night in yet another fit of brilliance i stayed in my new home without turning on my gas heat(saving $ of course). thus far my tiny electric heater has worked just fine. but when the mercury plummeted, it was below 0 F or below -17 C, my trailer became one huge freezer. i left water out to freeze and it did not disappoint(i'm just glad my guiness didn't explode). tonight i will bring a heavier blanket as the forecast is for this arctic cold front to continue. wish me luck and warmth as i wish all my friends in alaska, and today in chicago too. can you say burrrrrrr?... read more

Good morning! I wanted to upload some pictures in my awesome hotel room last night but Motel 6 charged $3 for Internet and I would have had to walk ALL the way around the building to the front desk for an access card. Forget that. It is Friday morning and I am sitting in a cubicle at the Kanawha Public Library using their Internet for free! Gotta be smart ;) So, first off, I want to say there are several disadvantages to starting a road trip on Christmas Day: 1) Gas stations that claim to be open "24 Hours" are not open 24 hours. My first gas stop scheduled for Hershey PA. got pushed back four exits as I went 0-3 on my first three gas stops (I pulled a Melky Cabrera). Each one was closed ... read more

oh crap, i left southern africa for the netherlands on the 14th of december. it was cold, dark and dreary. oh man i am not ready for winter yet. i had a difficult time motivating myself to leave the comforts of the home of my new friends, roel and monique(we met in mozambique), that kindly welcomed me into there abode. however, i did manage it a couple of days as i took the ubiquitous bicycle out for country/city tours(yes it is plural). not to worry, i didn't smoke-drink (kinda like drink-drive). despite the dreariness of the weather the netherlands is a lovely country. on the 18th, i happened to be channel surfing and saw that a snow storm was forecast for the detroit airport on the 19th. double oh crap, as my flight to detroit was ... read more

“Winter must be cold for those with no warm memories” Canaan Velley Resort Canaan Valley Canaan Valley Resort,West Virginia, is where we spent out Thanksgiving Weekend. We spotted an ad for a Thanksgiving Package, and the price was right. This, of course, is "off season" since the down-hill trails don't open for several weeks. The lodge was only 1/4 full. On Tuesday the area had 12 inches of new snow, so added to the snow already on the ground there was about 30 inches! We arrived on Wednesday and tried hiking but snowshoeing was the way to go. With the snow glistening in the sunshine, it was a magical place to play in the outdoors. Thanksgiving Day was crystal clear, and cold. So we did some snowshoeing and then had a wonderful... read more

We woke to two inches of snow and more coming down! Maybe we won't have Thanksgiving since it looks like it's Christmas already! Rich fixed his breakfast surprise recipe for all of us. It is eggs and cheese and a surprise! After breakfast, we went to the camper to get ready to leave and we couldn't get the slide to go in because it had too much snow on top! We had to borrow a ladder and a push broom and Rich climbed up to push the snow off! Our goodbyes said, we headed out a little before noon. The road was wet, but not snowy. A nearby house had a big backhoe in the field. It had a huge jackhammer on the end, used to break up the bedrock to enable construction. Most of the ... read more

While we were on the hilltop, we didn't have Wi-Fi, so we got behind. We had a liesurely morning and a tasty breakfast. Nancy's Cousin David took us to a point on a hill where we could see the Greenbriar River at the bottom of the valley. He had cut the road out there. It was a lovely view up there. Then he drove us on a tour of the boundaries of the 300+ acre farm with pastures, a hayfield, and woods. Then, while Jim went to his office in Charleston, the rest of us went in our truck to do errands. There were some snow flurries while we were out. We passed some long sheds that turned out to be turkey barns this time. After the errands, we stopped at their two little houses on ... read more
