A view of the lake from our room For anyone seeking a quick getaway from the hustle of Seattle, Lake Quinault is a perfect destination.
Several years ago, Jer and I stayed overnight at the historical Lake Quinault Lodge. We enjoyed our visit, though it was brief (we had a ferry to catch in Port Angeles early the following morning), and always intended to return. A ten year anniversary seemed a good excuse.
The Past
The last time we visited, we stayed in the boat house, which is adjacent to the main lodge. It was late May and still quite cool at night and in the morning. Our room was cozy--just what you would expect of a a room in a boat house, I suppose. If anyone reading this entry is weighing pros and cons of the rooms at Lake Quinnault Lodge, I recall our room had no television. The bathroom had a shower only. Neither of these are major cons, but I would suggest bringing books or magazines to occupy your time after the sun sets. It gets very dark very quickly, and you may suffer boredom if you are ill-prepared or have trouble sleeping.
During that visit, both Jer and I concluded that the Happy anniversary, indeed!
Jer and I celebrating over dinner Lodge's remoteness, its long, sloping lawn leading to the lake, and the clinging fog that rolled in and stayed until late morning were akin to the atmosphere of The Shining. This is not in a freaky, "Here's Johnny!" axe-wielding "red-rum" kind of way...well, maybe a little. It is NOT the hotel from the movie. It just...felt a little like that, only in a safe way. I don't want this observation to frighten people from staying there. It's a very cool old lodge. Why else would we return?
The Present
Our visit this time was in late January. The winter rates are worth the room upgrade. We opted for the king-sized room with fireplace and television. The room was spacious, lovely and incredibly private. Access to the main lodge was convenient. Our room had a large deck facing the front lawn and lake; I imagine in the summer the view is more limited. Despite the frosty conditions, we found ourselves sitting in wooden Adirondack chairs and enjoying the fresh air and peaceful quiet.
Wi-fi is available in the main area of the lodge. Appropriately inviting chairs and couches surround the large fireplace there. Large chess pieces invite players into who says it's creepy?
You can't tell, but it was snowing. Isn't that dark shadow behind me foreboding? I think so. one corner of the room. The indoor pool is a nice when the snow is falling outside, as it was when we arrived.
We did not take advantage of the many hiking trails surrounding the lodge. There are plenty of them in the immediate area.
Eats
We dined at the restaurant for both supper and breakfast. Tables for two line the panoramic windows that face the lodge's front lawn and are angled so both parties have a view. We ordered the plank salmon and vegetables for two for supper, which was delicious. Breakfast was equally good. The wait staff was friendly and informative.
Even if it's just for an overnight getaway, a trip to Lake Quinault lodge will leave you rested and relaxed. It's an experience I'm glad to have had, an look forward to staying there again.
