Wanting to experience some local stuff in our first week, on Tuesday we headed across the road to the Irish-themed (and therefore slightly cheezee) Wilde Rover pub, where resident band the Jam Dawgs (their spelling not mine) hold a weekly jamming session with musicians from around town. Cue some bejeaned men in loud shirts sporting dubious facial hair and ponytails playing rock n roll toons on electric guitars. Actually it was quite fun - lots of wooping and spin your pardner by the hand-type of thing. We didn't dance - we sat Britishly in a booth and smiled from a distance. Yesterday was the weekly Kirkland Farmers Market down on Marina Park, which is right on the waterfront. West London to the West Coast Our apartment is in downtown Kirkland, a "chi chi" (American expression meaning "twee but in a posh way") suburb across Lake Washington from Seattle. If we lean out of the balcony and crane our necks, we can actually see the Lake. The yearly Sea Fair is on this weekend, which involves the Blue Angels (much like the Red Arrows. But blue, obviously) doing swirly tricks over the lake, the super-rich cruising around on giant house-sized yachts, and general debauchery amongst the young'uns of Seattle. I don't have a photo of this because the 'Angels went over our apartment at some speed. Everything in America is ginormous. We have visited some super-sized stores, including CostCo (like a less chavvy Lidl) where the locals flock to purchase toilet rolls by the thousand ... read more

Well, I've safely moved back to Washington with my parents for the month before I leave. There is so much to do! Yet right now I'm just enjoying the time I have with my family. I'm happy to be able to spend Christmas with them. I've been frequently emailing a lady named Christine who is a teacher at the Molly and Paul High School, where I will be teaching, and she has been very helpful with preparing me for my time in Uganda. Also, the first week of school or so, there will be a "Culture Week" where the students get to show me things about their culture and I get to show them bits of mine.
