DAY 1: AKL-PPT-LAX-IAD: Air Tahiti Nui / American Airlines After nearly 7 months of meticulous non-stop planning, the day of departure is finally here... The anticipation is so exciting, but it is mixed with feelings of anxiousness about leaving the kids behind to fend for themselves and them missing out on what will be the MOST amazing trip. Oh well, they can do all this themselves when they grow up... Jan from across the road picks us up to drive us to Auckland and we arrived in plenty of time - a good start. Our flight to LA via Papeete left early afternoon on time and despite my expectations of Air Tahiti Nui not being very high (their reviews were pretty mixed, with plenty of comments about their uncomfortable seats and unfriendly staff), I thought the ... read more

Geo: 39.0095, -77.4647We left late on Thursday night; our flight for Istanbul didn't depart until 11:30pm. That timing worked out well, as we were able to work and go to school that day as usual, and then we had plenty of time to finish packing and eat dinner, before leaving for the airport around 9:30pm. As it turned out, my new group's annual off-site in Williamsburg was scheduled for the same week. I arranged to leave a day early, and drove home Thursday afternoon. We still had plenty of time, but I would have preferred to have not been away up until the day of departure. The airport was busy, but nothing too bad. Security and passport control seemed a little tighter, but we still ended up with time to kill at the gate before boarding. Our ... read more

10. WASHINGTON DC Friday, 11 May This blog, I will start of by excusing myself for not knowing exactly what I did every day of the last week. I guess I was too lazy to make little notes I usually do make and as all of those who’ve met me know: my memory sucks. So, I’ll just tell you about the days I actually did something interesting (or something uninteresting, but I still remember somehow). TUESDAY (1st)… Verena and I took a bus to Cartago, the former capital city of Costa Rica, to visit the ‘Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Los Ángeles’. Thanks to Verena’s terrible instinct of direction and my great instinct of knowing to go the exact opposite direction of wherever she says to go, we got to the Basílica without taking a wrong ... read more

Geo: 39.0095, -77.4647We arrived at the airport and waited for our shuttlebus. I took pictures of most ofthe planes that flew by; Mom berated me for these actions, telling me that mycamera would run out of batteries. She told me to pose by a sign like Vanna White so we could find our caragain when we return. Does she nottrust my excellent memory?(A-2 Blue Lot, Shuttle stop 4)We did the usual airport security procedures. The ticket lady told us to have a nicetrip, which we will attempt. Whenwe tried to find our gate (B38), we looked between gates B37 and B39, to noavail. They hid it further downthe hall, encouraging us to get a little more exercise. Apparently the people going to gates 37and 39 are already fit. It lookslike there are a lot of students ... read more

Geo: 39.0274, -77.3964I just wanted to post an official close to the odyssey. The flight was long (9 hours) from Munich to Dulles, but relatively comfortable and there was a joyous reunion with Dad and Nanny at the airport. The Customs Guy asked Josh how many Cuban cigars he brought back and he responded, "I don't know." Luckily, the agent didn't hold it against him and we skated on through.I couldn't have been more pleased with how the summer went. Our trip met or exceeded all my hopes and expectations for exploration, new experiences and making friends. Both the country and the people were wonderful. If it hasn't been clear from our blogs, we never felt unsafe and never had any problems with foodborne illness that were any more than what I would expect in a ... read more
