Hi y'all Wow, what a week, last week we got a quote for 16 000 to repaint the boat, yup 16 000. This included sanding down the entire boat filling all the holes sanding again, cleaning again, priming the boat, masquing the boat etc etc etc. Anyways when all was said and done it was 8 days of work for at least 2 guys at 70$ an hour including the paint. We could not do this, its way too much. So we looked at different paints and decided to go cheap, the cheap paint would cost about $ 700 to do the whole boat including primers etc etc. I was not comfortable with the fact that this paint would only be good for 3-4 years and we would have to start the whole process again, I ... read more

We are going into our third week here in Chesapeake Boat Works yard. We spent this past weekend in the sling so we could finish painting the underside of the keel and the spots where the pads hold up the boat. Now we are focusing on preparing the topsides for painting- we have removed the decals and sanded off the painted boot stripe and cove stripe. We have also dremeled out the cracks which we presume were caused by a less than perfect dark blue gelcoat application.... the cracks were primarily on the transom which even in its current faded state is stupidly hot to the touch on a semi-sunny day. We hope by filling them in and strenghthening them they will not reappear when we paint the boat back to its original white. It is ... read more

Quick update on things- front water tank has been cleaned out with vinegar and rinsed, plumbing fixed and we are pleased that all is good- no leaks. We have temporarily hooked up the drain for one of the sinks so now we have running water- no more trucking dishes up and down the ladder! All the compartments and extra storage places around the tank have been washed and a fresh coat of paint has been added- I'll do the final coat tomorrow morning and we can put our bedroom back together again.... at least until I tear it all apart again to revarnish sometime in the future when we run out of more urgent projects. We will be getting on to the plumbing in the back room soon, so Simba will have to move out of ... read more

Imfamous words said by myself yesterday as I had my head in a drawer fixing a leak in the forward water tank....... I actually scratched my face and arm since I could barely fit.... :( We are slow out of the gate at this point, the weather has been horribly warm and this makes our internal mental fuse quite short. We ended up quitting work at 4:15 yesterday from mental and physical exhaustion. Perspective is everything : We are here together working on a beautiful project, we actually started scrubbing the deck yesterday wow we were so happy to see the gelcoat shining, a small victory in an otherwise dismal couple of days. Perspective: We are having an adventure of a lifetime even with these days of not getting much done will be a memory that ... read more

... read more

We will probably end up spending 2 weeks here getting Gust O'Wind and ourselves ready for the trip south. We cleaned/repolished the hull then painted the bottom with antifouling paint. The boatyard installed an overboard waste discharge system for us to allow for off shore and Bahamas cruising where no pumpouts are available. The most expensive hole in GOW to date! We have met a number of interesting fellow cruisers already - including a great Australian couple who have been on the move for many years. We went to an evening presentation they put on at a local yacht club where they described and showed pictures of a recent cruise to Venezuela and Guyana. Lots of others are passing through here on their way south.... read more
