Saturday, October 4, 2008 They say what happens in Las Vegas stays in Las Vegas. It’s a good thing too. We feel like we breathed in enough smoke today to last a lifetime, and it’s a good thing all that smoke stays in Las Vegas. Guess they haven’t heard of lung cancer here, although we saw plenty of cancer awareness posters and a billboard that said ‘we fight cancer here’. Ha! The air was ghastly in spite of attempts in the better quality hotels to scent the air with all sorts of fragrances - designed to subliminally encourage more shopping and gambling no doubt. It was technically our last day in Disneyland but we were all "Disney'd" out. We had finished all of the rides and saw just about everything we had wanted so we headed for home. It was going to be a long drive. The first of two excursions that we had wanted to do on the way home was the Valley of Fire. It's about 35 minutes up the I15 from Vegas and then 20 minutes down Hwy. 169. It's only $6 to enter the park and well worth the side trip. The Valley of Fire was spectacular, as you will see from the pictures, parts of it are like desert and then all of a sudden these red formations start to appear out of no where. Sorry no Pics today. Unfortunately snow, wind and rain were the only items on the menu today. We stopped and had Carl's Jr. at Cedar City. Yes, Yes I know, enough about the food, but on road trips all you do is eat and drive just like a baby eats, poops and sleeps. Fortunately I skipped the latter one. Anyways, back to the story at hand. If you look at the map link, our plan was to take the Markaguant High Plateau Scenic Byway (14) over to the I89 and then come through the back of Zion Canyon via hwy 9.
