With the bright, hot sun quickly on the rise, we awoke to a clear azure sky and perfect weather for our day here in Moab. Unequivocally, my most favorite place on this rotating blue/green globe, this place always elicits calm, serenity, connection and is a special place that I enjoy with the love my life.
This morning we started off early for a terrific breakfast at
Jailhouse Cafe on Main Street in downtown Moab. The good night of rest made all the difference, but I suspect we are a little rundown and overtired. For breakfast, Jim ordered Swedish pancakes with fresh lingonberry jam and I had the southwest eggs benedict. One the most guilty treats at this particular breakfast joint is their soul food style bacon (and we had some!).
After breakfast, we headed into Arches National Park. My personal favorite. I never tire of driving up the steep, winding entrance road to a red rock playground that never ceases to amaze. The red rock formations capture every bit of my imagination and there is something new to discover on each and every trip. I've been to this park about a dozen times now and it sets the high water
mark for the best our national park system has to offer.
We drove out to the Broken Arch trailhead and hiked out to our favorite spot in the park. A high plateau overlooking the Broken Arch with a spot so shaded and so perfect for spending time together and in the park. Under that beautiful juniper, you are able to catch your breath and enjoy shelter from the blistering sun.
Further down into a secluded wash is another favorite spot. Hiking over a fallen tree and surrounded by juniper, sage brush, ephedra (aka Mormon tea) and prickly little ground cactus, this spot is another perfect place for a rest and to hang out enjoying the shade. We both leaned against the cool red rock wall - astonishing that is has been a whole year since we were here last.
Our last stop in the park was at Windows. A pull off off the main road, his is a very popular tourist stop. The trail head for Double Arch and for Windows is located at this pull off and by the time we stopped here, there wasn't a single parking space available. We drove through slowly, but were
unable to get out due to the traffic on a busy Saturday.
As we left the park, we discussed how we have not once had an afternoon nap on this trip. Two weeks thus far, we have been BUSY each and every day. Sightseeing, shopping, visiting destinations - we have kept on the move.
This afternoon, it all seemed to catch up with us and so we decided to lay low and take long overdue mid-afternoon naps! Decadent, indulgent and oh so relaxing, we retired to the cool (albeit bright) rental and slept soundly for a few hours!
We awoke and enjoyed the last few ours of the late afternoon and cooked dinner in the amazing kitchen once more. Coyote Run is by far one of the best vacation rentals we have enjoyed! The view off the patio is breathtaking and at night, it is like you can reach out and grab every star in the sky.
Tomorrow we head to Las Vegas for three days before transitioning from desert rats to wine tasting along the Central Coast of California. Closer and closer to home!
