Moab
Rt. 128 Moab is a destination. We're so glad we changed our route and decided to spend three nights here. The B&B The Cali Cochitta (House of Dreams) is lovely and our innkeepers Kim and David, wonderful. David cooks breakfast and I can honestly say they have been the best I've ever had. I would highly recommend staying here to anyone going to Moab. After Denver and the drive through the Rockies the Utah desert is just so different. I don't know how people live out here but they do. There would be miles and miles of nothing and then a ranch every now and then. We took scenic 128 into Moab which follows the Colorado River. Around each bend is another spectacular view. Every turn off you wanted to stop and take pictures. We spent two full days seeing as much as possible. Monday we toured The Arches National Park, Dead Horse Point and the Canyonlands by car. We did a few short hikes at the Arches but once again it was around 100 degrees. Luckily you can drive through all three parks and pull in to overlooks for absolutely breathtaking views. When you've grown up in New England the scenery is

Leaving Colorado so foreign. Speaking of foreign there are more European tourist here than American. Anyway, Sylvan took a lot of pictures. Tuesday we took a jet boat tour of the Colorado in the morning. We were able to do about 19 miles of the river in a fairly short amount of time. At several spots we were able to drift and just take in the peace and quiet. Unfortunately the river is below normal for this time of year so here were just a couple of places that were deep enough to do this. Our guide Cassidy did it all, drove the bus towing the jet boat and then launched it all by himself. He was quite knowledgeable and took us on a short hike up the river bank to see the petrified trees. It was quite a different perspective looking up from the river and seeing the top of the cliffs that we were looking down from just yesterday. Wanting to do as much as possible we did a 4x4 trip in the afternoon. I don't know what I was thinking. I'm not fond of heights. We were in a group of 6 plus our driver Gary in a Ford
Expedition. We started at the bottom of Canyonlands and then took the old mining road up the side of the canyon to the top. This was the real off roading experience. I was sure that if we didn't fall off the side of the cliff we would surly be crushed by a large bolder that decided to crash down just as we passed by. A white knuckle trip all the way. Even Sylvan agreed it was a scary trip but worthwhile. Just when I thought we had made it and were heading back oh no there was a second canyon and this time it was a drive down into Long Canyon which is very narrow and steep. Hopefully the video that Sylvan took with his camera will at least give you the sense of what it was like. I am glad we did the 4x4 our but I was sure happy to be back on paved road. Tomorrow we leave for Corvallis, two very long days of driving.
