This blog is about crossing Utah Hwy 95 through Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, part of the USA National Parks. The park crosses the lower White Canyon draining into the Colorado River (and the smaller Dirty Devil River) then up to a great scenic overlook; then up the lower North Wash (draining down into the Colorado River) where the park ends and the BLM land takes you to Hanksville, Utah. Now that park used to have free dispersed camping, but times have changed and camping is not legal. I drove across White Canyon then over the White Canyon bridge. Then I drove across several other small canyons (including the canyon with the de-funked Hite Marina with its now dry boat launch). Then I drove over the Colorado River and the Dirty Devil River. Then the highway ... read more

Back into civilisation again. Had a pleasant ride to Bryce National Park. Pitched tent and got straight out there. Yet more stunning, stunning stuff. Unfortunately we're not able to access a computer to upload any photos, but will do so when we can. I don't think I can even begin to describe the rock formation, so won't try. Weather pleasant, but Bryce is quite high, so very chilly at night dropping to below freezing. On the road again after stopping for breakfast, which consisted of the most ridiculous sized pancakes (only ate half) and then on to some of the most fantastic roads we've ever ridden. Unfortunately the GoPro is proving a complete pain, and I'm only just stopping Jim chucking it over the edge of a canyon (of which there are many). It keeps freezing ... read more

I liked watching Raiders of the Lost Ark growing up. I thought I couldn’t have that experience of finding the remains of long lost civilization on this trip, because anywhere I can reach safely has been explored for a century or more. Although that is true, parts of Utah can at least give the feel of heading off on a voyage of discovery. Today visits some of them. Fremont Pictographs The drive starts heading east through the Fremont Canyon. It passes completely through the Waterpocket Fold. The state built a paved highway through the canyon as the replacement for the tricky drive through Capitol Gorge (see yesterday). East of Fruita steep red walls close in, until the road is sandwiched next to the river, the only place it can fit. A parking lot appears on the ... read more

Tuesday September 30, 2008 Every student of geology needs to drive Utah route 261 - the ‘Trail of the Ancients’ And for the un-geologist this route offers spectacular scenery in rock mesa and river carved canyons. “No more rocks” you say? Yes, more rocks! Goose Neck State Preserve northwest of Mexican Hat, Utah (pop: 40) has an overlook of the canyon carved by the San Juan River. This view appears in many geology textbooks. The river has cut a 300 metres (1,000 feet) canyon through many strata and curves in tight loops like a ribbon. Even in dry September green coloured water flows through this canyon from the San Juan mountains, 200 km (150 miles) away, on its way to the Colorado River. Next on the class schedule is the 300 metre (1,000 foot) climb up ... read more
