McDonald observatory! We made it! Been hearing about this for years, it definitely held up to my expectations! We went in the morning to get our tickets for the star party and took a self guided tour of the grounds. It's a picturesque location with the 3 large telescopes sitting on top of mountains and the visitor area in a lower valley that's surrounded by the Davis mountains.
Being only 15 minutes away from the observatory, we pretty much saw all of our camp neighbors at Davis mountains last night at the star party!
Davis mts state park was beautiful, we had a nice large, quiet site with a great view of the mountain side. The town of Fort Davis is a little touristy because of the observatory but I really liked it, it still felt quaint and peaceful. We got to walk around the Fort Davis national historic site which was really pretty and well done.
The star party was fun, it wasn't the best weather conditions because it was a bit cloudy and the moon was super bright, but we still go to see things like binary stars, Uranus, star clusters and of course the moon! We had
this great interpreter do a short talk on the constellations, he was funny and really informative!
After the "party" we made a late night drive back to Marfa. Have you heard of the mysterious lights? We first heard about them from The Daytripper, so we had to go attempt to see them for ourselves. 😊 on I90 there was a rest stop setup for light viewing, surprisingly even though it was late at night, we had plenty of fellow curious visitors to keep us company. No mysterious lights, oh well. 😊
It was a full day! Now onward to Big Spring!
