Day 348 - Friday 12 September With no idea how long it might take to cross the border we decided to go early so at half past six in the morning we were at the bus station buying our tickets to Brownsville the border town on the US side. As most Mexicans cant go to America not surprisingly the bus was empty and me and Russ were the only passengers. It didn't actually take us long to cross and we soon found ourselves in Brownsville. Now being in America I expected to be able to revert back to speaking english but all i'm hearing around me is Spanish. After 6 months i'm starting to get sick of it. There was more bad news in store. Because Hurricane Ike is due to strike Houston later tonight they've ... read more

Well, this is my first official blog entry. Rather than reminisce about past trips (and there have been some great ones), I decided to start anew and record my travels from this day forward. Although I am planning to post some of my past favorite travel pictures a little later, this blog will mostly contain new adventures. Some trips will be short distances and some will be great. There are several trips in the planning stage right now. This weekend I will be heading east to the Gulf of Mexico near the Texas/Louisiana border. Some say it's not the prettiest place in the world because of the industrial component, but I have read that as of late the natives have been making great strides in their battles to clean up some of the worst areas. I ... read more

San Antonio: 30/06-06/07 We were now getting closer to Mexico but wanted to stay in the US for the fourth of July so we dropped the car off in Austin and took a bus South to San Antonio. We had booked a week in a campsite on the edge of town so when we arrived, we caught the local bus to the campsite where we pitched out tent in a nice spot under some pecan trees and spent the rest of the evening relaxing. In the morning we took the bus into town to find the market which turned out to be a collection of tourist shops selling Mexican crafts and not the fresh produce stalls we had expected. We did however manage to find some breakfast in a small food court. Although San Antonio is ... read more

We knew we were in for a long drive today (455 miles) so we had a few cache stops planned. We drove across some really desolate spots in Texas. One of the most fun things about this day was the 80 MPH speed limit. In the afternoon, we went through a lot of thunderstorms which was really interesting in the desert. The rain seemed to bring out the tarantulas - Gabe kept seeing them cross the road. Once, i was brave and got out of the car to take a picture. But based upon the number we saw on the road, there must have been thousands of them out there. At some point, we stopped to use the facilities at Wal-Mart in the middle of no where. It was a interesting discovery for us that they ... read more

Today is offically day 15 on tour and my third day in Texas. Yesturday as you all know was the 4th of july and like the usual tradition, we blew stuff up. Apparently its NOT legal here in the Lone Star State, but certain police officers will permit it. Its really weird cause as we were buying the fireworks from an ACTUALLY fireworks store, there was a sheriff inside just chillen. i guess there was like "safe zone" to light them, but we just found a parking lot away from anything and lit them. it was fun. and i ran from every single one. especially those damn roman candles, im NOT ok with those. Anyways, that was day two. the first day was in Dallas, and it was soooo friggen humid. it said it was only ... read more

We love Texas. June 3, 2008 we visited San Marcos and Aquarena Springs and the site of archaeological digs which indicate Spring Lake may be "one of" or "the earliest" --inhabited location of marine life in the U.S. The Glass Bottom Boat Tour was the focus of the day, discovering Spring Lake's ecosystem, which actually provides home to six endangered species, some 1,000 natural springs and a site for underwater archaeology. The Wetlands Boardwalk provided a closeup and personal view of all the plants and wildlife which inhabit the area, within view of a major thoroughfare, yet far removed from everyday life...a step back into nature! More details to come...stay tuned. Aquarena is now part of the Texas State University System, formerly Southwest Texas State University System and the River Systems Institute..... Tours are offered daily, ... read more
