We have finally entered into the part of our trip that is new to us. Leaving Carlsbad, NM, we headed south into TX staying the night (Nov 28)in Fort Stockton. The next day we drove to Alpine, then straight south to the very small community of Terlingua. Since BBNP has but one place for lodgeing, we stayed right out of the park in this very interesting little settlement. To live down here one has to have a certain kinship with loneliness, nature, the lack of many accepted necessities of life, the convenience of most stores, and the knowledge that your closest neighbor may enjoy these qualities of life and not care too much about being your buddy. It is very beautiful in a very natural, quiet sort of way. Stop the car, step out-side, and you ... read more

19 Feb - Santa Elena Canyon After stopping at the store at Castolon and looking around a bit I asked the clerk there how the shortcut from Santa Elena Canyon to Maverick Junction on Old Maverick Road was. He informed me that it was a "washboard dirt road", meaning rough and it takes an hour and a half to drive the 13 miles. So I decided that after visiting the canyon I would drive back out on the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive that I had came in on to Santa Elena Junction and then West to Terlingua. So I drove over to Santa Elena Canyon trail. When I got there I put 2 bottles of water in my backpack inside one of those plastic insulated bags you buy at Wal-Mart for a dollar or so and ... read more

Feb 17 Sanderson-Marathon-Big Bend National Park- Rio Grande Village Headed west out of Sanderson in the morning planning on stopping at Marathon to visit the "Post Pool" on the way. It is where some springs came up and flowed into a natural pond and of course it became a campground for Indians, and a post for Calvary etc. It is a very nice clear pool of water and there is a picnic area and what appears to be a platform for dancing. Also there is a sign that says camping by permit but I don't know who you see to get a permit. To get to the park if going west on Hwy 90 go past the exit for Hwy 385 south to Big Bend and go into Marathon and turn left (south) onto Avenue D ... read more

19 Feb - Chisos Basin to Castolon Today planned on hiking the Santa Elena Canyon trail. Drove over to Castolon via the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive. Had intended to get a campsite at the Cottonwood Camp but it must have been an old sand dune that a thin layer of grass had overgrown. Everything was covered with a layer of dust and every time someone else drove through the campground it added another layer. I decided to tour the canyon and then drive back out the ross Maxwell Scenic route and then West to Terlingua. More on that in the next entry.... read more

Feb 18 - Boquillas Canyon I drove over to the Boquillas Canyon and hiked up and over the hill, then down into the Canyon and as far as I could go without swimming then back out . In the canyon was a Mexican singing and selling different items. He said he used to be the ferry Operator but Homeland Security no longer let them operate the ferry and people could only cross at designated locations elsewhere. ... read more

Feb 18 -Boquillas Canyon - Chisos Basin The afternoon of the 17th February at the Rio Grande Village Campground had been in the 90's. Too hot for me. So I had decided I was going to spend the next day or days at the Chisos Basin Campground in the center of the park at 5401 feet. I figured I would go hike the trail into Boquillas Canyon and then go to the hot springs. Then over to the Chisos Basin campground to get out of the heat for the evening and night. I went to the Rio Grande village Laundromat and sat on the bench, plugged in and sent out some emails. Then I drove over to the Canyon and hiked in and back out in the heat and then was in no mood for another ... read more

Since shortly after I retired to Silver City NM in 1998, I had heard about the beauty of Big Bend National Park TX and had wanted to mosey over see for myself. It seemed only natural to make that the first stop on my great adventure. Originally, I had planned to spend a week in Fort Davis TX and then a week in Big Bend NP. When I learned there are no RV hook-ups in Big Bend NP (I have yet to acquired a generator), that idea was quickly postponed. Since I did want to get a sample of the area, I decided to take two one-day trips into the Big Bend area to satisfy my curiosity. More about that later. I also learned that spring break lasts almost the entire month of March for somebody, ... read more
