blog 03-09-19 Exploring Terlingue
I just love Terlingue. It is a little town on the west side of Big Bend and has several outfitters to go hiking, boating and jeep touring. Whatever you want to do they will make it happen.
It even has it's own ghost town just up the hill from my campground and my first stop was the grave yard. Yes, I have weird tastes, but I've always been attracted to graveyards. Pictures. On Nov 2 they have a celebration to commemorate the Day of the Dead. There is a ceremony at the graveyard where they have a bon fire and celebrate their deceased loved ones.
I went on a drive to the Big Bend Ranch State Park on the west side of the national park with a drive along the Rio Grande river that is just a must do outing. The scenery is beautiful with rugged mountains you drive up and down all while watching the river, flowers and possible wildlife. Very suddenly a javelinas crossed the road, then another, then another etc, all together there were 12 that crossed one at a time. Pictures They are ugly critters and smell like skunks I
am told.
Watson and I went for a walk on the Voo Doo trail and caught the overlook and a good view of the stones stacked on top of each other. There were some cactus blooming there so I got some pictures of them.
We headed back home because I had a date for dinner. I met a woman by the name of Pat who has been living in her rv for 2 years after selling her house in Hilton Head. I asked how long she intends to travel, she said I'm not done yet. Everything she sees gets her interested in something else so it may be a while. She also has a Fiat that she tows with a class C motorhome.
We met at 4:30 and drove to the Starlight in the Ghost Town which was 5 min up the road. The restaurant opens at 5 so we were going to get a drink on the porch and listen to the native residents who grab a musical instrument and just play on the porch some sing. We got to talking to 2 younger women and they thought we were such courageous old ladies to rv
by ourselves that they bought us a drink. We sure had a hoot with them til it was time for dinner.
The Starlight is an old theater complete with stage and old time bar and was called the starlight because the original building didn't have a roof, the stars were the roof. They had a very different menu with Texas steak, antelope, bison and salmon. Didn't expect salmon but Pat had it and said it was wonderful. I had the antelope and it was excellent. We split a chocolate pecan pie with vanilla ice cream for desert and it was the perfect topping for a terrific meal. We talked to 2 women that were at the table next to us and heard our conversations about camping and they just wanted to tell us how brave they thought we were. They were from Houston as were most of the people in town that day. It was the 2nd day of a state wide spring break and I think half the state descended into Big Bend.
We shopped next door for a short time then headed home after an event filled evening.
